Question Why do older Legacy wagons sound...

Like the WRX Exaust on low acceleration? Most of them that I heard go pass sounds like this...

A friend of mine has an older subaru wagon, like a 88, with a 1.8L turbo, and truthfully, when it runs, it sounds a lot like the WRX factory exhaust

Is it something in the exaust on the way it's built to make it sound like that? I like the deep growl sound it makes..

Its just the subaru boxer sound. All subarus would sound pretty much the same if you put a performance muffler on them.

I have seen 80something GL wagons that if you had your eyes closed swore a WRX went by because the muffler has rusted out. Some people pay big $$$ for that sound and some are a bit more patient.

Same reason 5 year old GM cars with the 3.1 or 3.4 V6 sound like circle track cars... the stock exhaust is rotted out and the owners don't a) notice or b) care enough to get it fixed.

I'd like my RS to sound that cool though.
