Question Car Care Protection?

I just recently purchased a 2010 Impreza Limited, Black exterior with black leather.

What are the facts behind the car care protection ie: undercoat, rust proofing, leather care, shine protection and stone guards.

I have heard that rust proofing is unnecessary for new cars for they are all sealed at the factory.

what would you recommend to protect the car as best as possible what is a waste of money and unnecessary?

extended warranties, are they necessary?

I live in Alberta, Canada so i am pretty much affected by all weather conditions except for ocean water.

A good waxing, rallyarmor mudflaps, and POSSIBLY the 3M clear bra if you're willing to pay that much is the most you'll need. If you're driving around in areas with lots of salt in the winter, be sure to hose off the salt from under the car.

I think the clear bra's are really nice, as stated above. But I just think it looks goofy with the line on the hood if you're up close.

Yeah but it'll save you a buttload of salt/rock chips.

Very true, they really aren't noticable unless your within about 4 feet away.

But the cost of all of that, including installation of the 3M bra is about the price of a paint job.

To each his own, but my experience has shown me trying to sell a car that has been repainted is much more difficult than one with factory paint. You may know that you only repainted because of chips/scratches, but a potential buyer might suspect an accident repair.

I'm more distracted by the fact that you Canadian's have the option of an Impreza LIMITED with Leather?

Best we can do here in the US is a "Premium" which means we're sending our new Premium out for aftermarket leather soon.

+1000 for the Rally Armor flaps. If you like the look, they do help keep the sides much cleaner. This was the first modification I made to the car. I had the flaps before I picked up the car.

Wash the car every couple of weeks and get the undercarriage washed. Do your regular maintenance, replace things that are worn out before they cause you more problems, change the oil regularly, etc, yada yada....

Yeah, it sounds simple, but this kept my last Subie going strong for 13 years and 350K.

There are a host of products that you can use to keep it clean. Lots of people like Meguire's line of products. I use a lot of them. Check out the car detailing threads in the General section of the boards for more product advice.

I did not buy an extended warranty on my '09 based on my experience with my previous '97 Impreza. You can always buy the extended warranties after the fact, right up to when your factory warranty runs out. I figured that would give me a couple of years to find out how the 08s were holding up. I still don't plan to buy one, but we'll see in a year or two.

I did, however, buy a exterior/interior protection package based on what I had heard about the paint on the 08+ cars. It was rolled into the financed cost of the car. They coat the outside with something and put a protectant over the interior too (similar to Scotchgard I assume). Don't know if it buys me much in the long run, I have still had paint chips, but it may give me another way to get paint issues taken care of if they persist or get worse.

Edit: Oh, either buy the Subaru foglight protectors or get some rockblocker for them. I don't think that they are particularly susceptible to breakge, but in only a couple of winter storms, I've already had one lens get cracked.

I have a 2010 Impreza Sport (world rally blue) on the way in a couple weeks. I got the paint, interior, and undercoating protection but not the spray. I just haven't decided if its necessary yet. I skipped over the electronic rust protection. I also ordered Rally Armor mud flaps which the dealer will install for free when they put my winter tires and wheels on before I take delivery.

/edit I added the clear bra today too.
