I'm thinking I got about another week or 2 MAX on my nearly bald summer/OEM tires. below 50 degrees and it feels like driving on concrete tires, though I was able to spin them in 2nd gear today at 3/4 WOT. It's ok, it was a school zone for deaf, dumb and blind kids.

This is amazing!! I like the lights in the hood scoop

I'll probably wait a little while too. I also am waiting on my tires to come in as well

When I get the rally car back I'll be swapping out the crappy all seasons on there for some snows. Until then it's summers on the Miata.

All Winter tires should be changed when temps drop below 45 degrees.

Bah. I wait until there is snow on the roads before I make the change.

Those pictures were taken on a frozen lake in central WI. It was a fairly warm that day and the snow was kind of packy making for some great photo opportunities.

Lights in the hood scoop. I could never figure out why the 2.5 RS has that non functional hood scoop then I thought it would be a good place to put some driving lights.

Hopefully pretty soon. I got an extra set of wheels for my Legacy, but no tires yet. Now I have an extra set of tires for the Impreza, but now I need some wheels to mount 'em on.

I'm thinking I'm gonna get mine swapped out next week on Monday. My stockers are FTL on these 29 degree mornings.

ordering this week, but you generally don't want to switch to winter tires when the temp is above 45 degrees F. winter tires have a different mix in the rubber compound.

im debating between blizzaks ws70 (which are new) and michelin x-ice xi2.....
what tires do you guys use?

I've used blizzaks for the past 4 winter season and loved them.

Stupid question, but how hard is it to replace tires by yourself? I have to take the winter tires off the 4bolt alloys they came with then put them on my stock wheels..after taking those tires off too. Thanks!

I don't change my tires at all and I'm on summers. I'm a better driver as a result.

Take them to a good tire dealer (not a hack who doesn't care about alloys). Insist on having their best changer do the job as the place will probably not want to deal with a customer complaining he/she messed my $1,000 rims.

But don't you garage your car in the winter? I seem to remember you saying something about not taking it out in the salt, etc...

I actually just switched to my winter wheels....although technically in this case they'll be dirt/gravel tires.

I found this:

Getting the tires on and off might be tough, but you still have the balance them as well, which without a balancing machine, could be a PITA and take some time. I found this too, but McGyver in the woods might not be a good creditable source:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2175712_balance-tires.html

It would save you a lot of time and effort to get them done by a shop/dealership that can mount and balance them for you. If you're gonna go it alone though, God bless.

Take them to a shop. Prices will vary from $10-30 per tire depending on how much you value your wheels. If they're just stockers and you don't really care if they get scratched a bit, Walmart does it for about $10/each wheel. If you're worried, take it to a specialty shop and let them know you're picky. You'll pay more, but it's more likely to be done carefully.

I'm planning on changing to winter tires sometime within the next week to 10 days.

I just picked up a set of the new Michies (the xice) and they should arrive tomorrow. Sure... we are going to get cold this week...but it will warm up over the weekend. I probably wont switch over for another few weeks (but hey.. that is the advantage to being a meteorologist, right?)

I bought 4 new tires and a set of Enkei's for them to be on - so I will just swap them on and off when the time is right.

I disagree. All you are learning by driving in the snow on summer tires is how unbelievable slow you have to go. I'd take a RWD car on snows over AWD on summers any winter/snowy day.

I just got my new General Altimax Artic mounted on my wheels. They are a really good tire for the money.

Blizzaks are great, but they don't last as long and I've ended up chunking the tread blocks on several sets. I do a lot of ice rallycross events on frozen lakes though.
