Default Clunking in front end, high milage 2.5RS

Hello all,

I have a 2002 2.5RS. She's got about ~160k on the clock.

Original shocks (yikes).

When I hit larger bumps, I hear a clunking up front. The steering is tight, so I don't think it's a tie rod end.

Given the milage, what is the typical cheap shock replacement running these days? Autozone/Advance don't list any replacement shocks/struts on their website, which is odd since it is such a common car.

Are shock tower mounts something that go south eventually?

Not a Subaru guy, it's my wife's car. Hence my lack of knowledge.

kyb makes replacement struts specifically for the RS, just do a internet search and you can find tons of retailers that carry them.

Kybs are good, I'd recommend the stock replacements though. And the Mounts can go bad, but it is likely you just need to replace the struts and springs and she will be good to go.

Haven't checked the endlinks. Not even sure what you mean by those. I've checked the tie rod ends for play, no issue there.

Make sure the nut on top of the struts is tight. If it works itself loose it will clunk.

Also, look at and shake the swaybar to see if anything came loose.

The endlinks aka swaybar endlinks are the links attached to the end of the swaybar and then to the rest of the suspension. I just replaced mine due to a clunking over bumps.

Ahh, got it now. Those are pretty easy to get to also. I'll jack it up tomorrow and give them a wiggle.

Thanks for the help, that may of just saved me needlessly putting in a set of struts!

also just double check the control arm bolts, i had a clunk for a few months and then finally got a chance to fix it, turn out that a bolt wasn't torqued down properly!!!!
