Default Laptop won't boot up. Help.

My mom gave me her Toshiba Satellite (A105-S2001 Notebook - PSAA2U-04E018) like a month ago to check out. I plug it in, hit the power button, and it doesn't get past the very first ascii screen.. there is a progress bar like it's loading something (in ascii), goes half way and stops every time, then nothing. I can't even hit F2 to get into setup.

Recently I stopped by her place and told her I can't fix it and don't know what's wrong, so she gave up and bought a new laptop. So, if I fix this one I guess it's mine. My guess is bad RAM, but I don't have any replacements. I tried turning it on with both sticks removed but it went into an endless cycle of powering on and off. Hmm.

c/n's: Turn on laptop, ascii load bar goes half way and stops, then nothing.

Is the RAM in snug? Have you messed with the HD?

That would be my next guess. Bet you could get one for next to nothing.

Is this just a data recovery effort or you want the laptop functional again?

My Toshiba netbook is doing the exact same thing. It was working fine then I brought it up north to a local rally and it started doing what you described. IDK if the bumpy ride up had anything to do with it.

Probably the MB. I had a faculty member's Toshiba take the same dump last month.

I'm thinking mobo, but just for the hell of it try the CMOS battery recommendation above. Also, remove the optical drive, the hard drive, the wireless module and, if it has one, the modem module, and leave just one stick of RAM in it. Take out the battery and just plug it in and turn it on. If it posts, turn it off and try putting the HD back in. Keep adding things back in until it fails.

Did you put in a disc that TarmacRally sent you by chance?
