Default 2010 Volkswagen Amorak Revealed in Full Production Form

Quote:
Volkswagen has officially unveiled the 2010 Amorak pickup.
Looking virtually identical to the concept, the Amorak features bold styling, a modern grille, and distinctive tail lights. Available exclusively in crew cab form (a "single cab" will debut in the first half of 2011), the truck has a bed height of 525mm, a cargo area of 2.52 square meters (1,555mm in length by 1,620mm in width), and a payload capacity of up to 1.15 tonnes. When equipped with the optional hitch, the Amorak can pull trailers that weigh up to 2.8 tonnes.

Riding on a ladder frame chassis, the Amorak will be offered with full-time all-wheel drive, switchable all-wheel drive, or rear-wheel drive. The switchable all-wheel drive system uses a positive clutch that is activated via the push of a button.

When activated, "the truck can even conquer 100 percent gradients (45 degrees) with full cargo loading." On the other hand, the full-time all-wheel drive system has a torsen differential that "distributes drive forces at a 40:60 ratio to the front and rear axles". Regardless of what setup is selected, all models can be equipped with an optional locking rear differential.

At launch, the Amorak will be offered with a 2.0-liter TDI engine that produces 120 kW (163 PS) and 400 Nm of torque. In mid-2010, Volkswagen will introduce another four-cylinder TDI engine that churns out 90 kW (122 PS) and 340 Nm of torque. With all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission, the 90 kW (122 PS) TDI engine consumes 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers while CO2 emissions come in at 199 g/km. Likewise, the 2.0-liter TDI averages 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers while emitting 206 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

In terms of equipment, the base Amorak has manual controls (windows, door locks and mirrors), unpainted exterior components (the front bumper, door handles and mirrors), 16-inch steel wheels, height-adjustable front seats, and a folding rear bench. The mid-level Amarok Trendline boasts body color exterior components, a CD stereo system, cruise control, fog lights, 16-inch aluminum wheels and power windows, door locks and mirrors.

The range-topping Amarok Highline comes with chrome exterior trim, 17-inch aluminum wheels, a contrasting interior color scheme, a premium sound system and automatic climate control.

Set to go into production at VW's Pacheco plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Amorak will go on sale in South America in early 2010 while the European launch is scheduled for the second half of 2010.

Nice. Too bad VW says they aren't bring the truck to the USA.

All wheel drive, full frame, 2300 lb cargo capacity, 5600 lb towing, 4 passenger, 6 speed manual and 30+mpg.... I don't even hate the simple interior. If it was available and under $32k I would pick one up as soon as I could.

I really wish the EPA and manufactures would work to get small diesels into the USA.

I don't understand why they won't sell them here. It's the biggest market of pick-up trucks. Especially in the South.

This looks like a great little truck! If I wasn't so afraid of VW electrical systems, this could definitely be a replacement for our Dakota.

not sure why you are afraid.

105k on our Gli with no problem other than a CEL due to the aftermarket DP/cat (should be fixed with an O2 spacer)

if you get a VAGCOM tool they are really easy.

Um, it's a 4 banger with less than 200 hp?

While this vehicle makes sense on paper for many an American truck buyer, it would be really difficult to choose something like this over an F150 or Silverado with a V8 for most pick up truck buyers.

not bad with nearly 300lb-ft

I see this as competing with the ridgeline rather than an F150. now stick that V10 TDi in there.... and mmmhhmmm.....

I'm just not a fan of VW styling I guess. The only VW I find attractive is the CC, and even then the front end is just bland to me.

I agree, but I still think most folks would drive both and choose the gasser in the Honda. And even then, I haven't seen many Ridgeline's on the road, either, but perhaps that varies from place to place.

If they put the 3.6 from the Passat and bring it here, it will sell like gangbusters.

Default VW says U.S. market wont support Amarok truck

Quote:
VW recently released pictures of its new 2011 Amarok light global pickup, and very quickly began receiving questions about whether or not VW intended to sell the truck in the American market. Volkswagen Group of America president and CEO Stefan Jacoby has now addressed the questions, and even provided the number of expected sales needed to make the business case.

Leftlane recently reported on the early release of the Amarok truck pictures and specifications, but until now lacked confirmation on VWs plans for the truck in the U.S. market. Unfortunately for U.S. buyers in love with the Amarok light pickup, Jacoby says that VW would need to sell at least 100,000 Amarok pickups to make it feasible.
To make matters worse for prospective buyers, the only would-be competitor to the Amarok to reach those sales figures (and barely) is the very established Toyota Tacoma, according to PickupTrucks.
Although VW is a major player in world markets, it currently struggles to achieve large sales volumes in the U.S. market, making the possibility of the Amarok achieving the necessary sales figures virtually impossible in the near term.
For other markets, the Amarok is powered by a 2.0-liter common rail injection diesel, capable of 163 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. In the future a cheaper, less powerful engine is expected to become available with 122 hp and 250 lb-ft.
The Amarok also features standard rear-wheel-drive to be expected from a truck, in addition to optional all-wheel-drive with a 60 percent rear bias.
As it currently stands VW plans to start production later this year in Pacheco, Argentina, and the truck will be sold in South America, South Africa, Australia, as well as in some European countries

Somebody needs to build something to replace the Ranger.

Nice truck, VW. Too bad North America's left out. Really, you'd hafta sell 100,000 of them to make it worthwhile in the US? That's half of Subaru's entire annual volume.

I seriously want to know what kind of drugs VW's marketing department is on... I mean, where do names like Amorak, Tiguan, Routan, Toureg etc. come from? Cool truck though...

Funny how the whole article refers to it as "Amorak" when the badge in the picture clearly says "Amarok"
