what color should normal spark plugs be?

I installed one step colder spark plugs and ran them for about 5000 miles. When I changed my stock ones out, they had a greyish tip and looked clean. Today, I took out the colder plugs and the tips were coated with a reddish brown layer. They looked like rust and looked bad. So I changed out the colder plugs and put in the original plugs. Can anyone tell me what the reddish color implies? The reddish residue was all over the plugs. Does that mean my car was running improperly?

I'm not positive but I think that is caused by fuel additives like octane booster and injector cleaners. Stuff like that.

Have you added anything like that?
