Default Starter grinds after start

Has this happened to anyone else? When it is cold out you start the car release the key and it acts like the starter is still engaged for a second or two.

Is this going to leave me stranded someday?

Can you really buy all these detailed parts for a starter? Like an over run clutch.

best and cheapest way to go is to get a reman starter with a lifetime warranty.... not exactly cheap, though, but buying individual parts is a pain for a starter. Schucks has a good starter for the subaru...

mine just went out a few hours ago lol, had been sticking and grinding for a couple seconds after start up for over a year. seems as though napa has direct oem remans, but they're pricey and i doubt they are in stock. im going to contact my local parts store in the morning, they usually sell remans for very cheap and if i buy it through my auto class i get a discount.

Hey happs subi how did it go?

Guess I'll take it apart and clean the Shaft assembly gear, Over running clutch, lever set and the solenoid plunger.

Does this starter have a spiral on the shaft the sun gears are attached to or does it just engage with the solenoid?

Sorry. I meant what was wrong with it. Did it just grind and not engage?

it would engage, but after start up it would run for like two seconds, making that other grinding sound, not the grinding sound when the starter is just spinning and not turning the flywheel. it did that since last autumn when it started getting cold, then just yesterday it stopped working. it would just make a single "click" sound, kinda like when the battery doesnt have enough juice, but my battery is less than a month old and that was a very hard "click".

but i just installed my new starter, got a re-manufactured DENSO from my local parts store $160 + $60 core charge. my old one just looked tired, quite a bit of play on the shaft with the teeth too... she starts up much quicker and quieter now

Mine does that every now and then...not just when its cold. It's been doing that for as long as I can remember. No problems yet.
If the starter does end up taking a dump...I'll just get another one!

02-07 WRX/STi (mt) starters are the same. I know getting a used one might not be the best way to go, but I found a starter out of an 07 STi with only 9k miles on it, when my original started grinding at startup. The 07 starter looked like new when I got it. Just letting everyone know, that 02-07 wrx/sti starters are interchangable, if anyone wants to take a used route.
