Default What would keep an engine from cranking?

Scenerio:

I put the key in the ignition, push in the clutch, turn the key to start, but there's nothing but a very loud clicking sound. The engine does not even turn over.

What do I need to check?

This is very basic but if you don't even have a click,is your battery connected?sounds silly,do your dash light's come on,if so check the ignition wire on the starter,do you have power?
let me know,
Alan
p.s. check all fuses.

Yeah, I have power...it does click...about 10-15 times a sec when the key is in the start position.

Is your starter spinning? (Have a friend crank the engine and listen for a whir -)

It could be a number of things, the first of which I'd check is whether or not your starter has any gears left on it. If it does, it's possible that it is only partially engaging the flywheel. It's pretty easy to get out of the engine (on a stock EJ25).

You can test cranking it with any 12V supply. If it's not spinning, replace it. If it's not extending so that it would engage the flywheel, tear it appart and grease it with white lithium grease.

Now, if it's not spinning you could have a short (and that ticking would coincide with some sparks flying under your hood). Make sure you're getting all the normal sounds and lights you expect when you turn the key into the ignition on position (radio etc). If that all checks out, check the wiring in and around your starter. Make sure all the insulation is there and that there are no burn marks etc.

If none of this helps, pop back on here and I'm sure some people could offer up some other ideas.

I just thought of something...how many volts does the engine need to crank? My car has been sitting for awhile, and I've been doing some electrical stuff to it, so I've had the lights on, etc.

My volt gauge reads about 10.5 before I try to crank it...could this be my problem?

It should be no lower than 12.0 and 8.5 under load. But it should still start though. I have had em as low as 9.0 start the car. Still though that is a good place to start. Try jumping it or charging you're battery.
