Default 02 WRX hood won't close .. :(

yesterday someone needed a jump start at work and after they drove away my hood wouldn't properly latch .. not sure if its the spring and latch not working or it just needs adjustment.

is it safe to drive with the hood just latched on that first catch that it makes? last night i rigged up some bungies and drove painfully slow. dreading the drive in today.

the maintenance manual doesn't really go too in depth on the latch or properly adjusting it .. any insights? its freezing out and i hate working in the cold (i have no garage)

never had a problem before.

If it worked before and you haven't had body work done, it isn't an adjustment issue. My bet would be that you have some ice jamming up the mechanism.

It happens to me sometimes and I just spray some WD40 in there.

If you haven't had any accident damage, then you could try two things: Spray WD40 into the latching mechanism like bluesubie suggested, and you can get to it from the top and front of the car. Also, you could try adjusting your rubber stoppers on each side of the car. They just screw in by hand.

unbolt the latch from the car after marking its position, turn it gently so you can see the back side of hte latch. You will see a litte metal hook that the ball on the cable pulls on, this hook pivots, whet gets gunked up it sticks making the hood unable to latch.

clean it out an lube it up, its pretty easy to see how it works.

I had the same problem, it turned out to be the actual wire that holds the latch open.. i just re-adjusted it into the beam above the radiator.. and it stayed closed for me. just trying to help.

This is a wild guess, but I didn't realize it until one accidentally fell off one day.
On either end of the engine bay above the head lights, there are 2 rubber cylindrical pads that you can rotate to adjust the height/ standoff of the hood when it closes. See if it is that, or corrosion in your hood release wire.

I had the same problem on mine today (been really cold in Minneapolis 3F). I tried the W40 and let it sit for a bit and then was able to shut the hood.
