Exclamation possible piston slap or knock at cold start??

I live ine salem oregon I noticed on very cold mornings my engine is slightly louder than usual during a cold start up/first start up of the day.
I can hear a slight VERY SLIGHT tapping or "knock" I guess you could say near the 2500-3000rpm range. Than its unoticable before the car is even fully warmed up.
First question,
Can this be an early sympton of a spun rod bearing or some sort of rod knock?
Next I have noticed my engine is burning oil faster than I would like it to. In my opinion it shouldn't burn any, but I'm losing 3/4 a qt per 1000miles to my rough calculations. I'm leaning towards my valves or piston rings the culprit behind this.
Second question,
Could friction within the engine block itself burn oil?

Other than all this car runs great! Just got oil changed aswell as MTF changed.
Check out my profile for list of mods if that information is any use to you.
Car has 90k on it.
Thanks for lookin all
Happy new year

It is normal for your car to make lots of noise during a cold start up. It is also normal for your car to burn a little bit of oil. You are probably ok. You might want to change the type of oil though.

Well is it normal being two and a half qaurts low at 3.5k?? I've never been low on oil at any point ever with any other car I've owned.. (I know I should have changed it at 3 but didn't get around to it and squeezed one more trip in.)
And if so, I should be checking my oil regularly and keeping it in operating range? (Annoying)

From what I've found, these things do burn a lot of oil. I guess it makes sense when you pressurize the cylinders so much with the forced induction. I have to check my oil at least once between oil changes and add a little. (I have also heard that if you don't boost much you won't have as much trouble)

Two and a half quarts in 3500 miles seems like a lot to me. I normally go through about a quart between changes (German Castrol changed every 3K).....With these cars, you have to be especially diligent with checking your oil, I check mine at least once a week.

Edit: I see you're running Royal Purple, from what I've seen on the forums here our cars eat RP and Mobil One like no other oil. Try out some German Castrol next time you change your oil and see how your oil consumption goes.....

The max "normal" rate of consumption is 1qt per 1k miles. You should be checking the oil at every other gas stop, and topping it up as needed.

Just so you know, burning oil won't kill your car, but taking turns and hitting the brakes (pickup starvation) while 2.5qts low will.

I dont use a drop between changes (3000) miles. The motor is new 15000 miles on it. I run rottela full syn. In my opinion ya its normal for a high milage engine.. Just keep it full you will be ok. What kind of oil do you run?

I'd say your usage is a bit high, but may have to do with the oil your using. I was using more when using Mobil 1, for sure. I think I use about 3/4 of a quart every 5k on Rotella 5w40. my car has 105k on the clock.

Try making a switch to German castrol which is only sold at Autozone. My car used to lose a lot of oil (>1 qt every 3k miles) when using Mobil1, but since switching to GC oil loss has pretty much stopped. Oil level is still very close to "F" mark after 3k miles. My oil catch can is also empty (has filter inside).

That obnoxious noise is normal on our cars. If noise goes away, I wouldn't really worry about it. MAKE SURE TO CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!

Thanks guys ill try some high milage oil...
Almost a whole qt of oil per 1k is a *****ing joke to me, personally. I wanna get an engine stand and pull my valves out.
Anyone live in oregon?? Haha
