Default 2011 WRX OEM stereo, installed into 2008 STI, buttons stop working

Picked up a used 2011 WRX OEM head-unit for my 2008 STI (no nav).

Part : 86201FG620
Model: PF-3292A-A

Thinking it's bad, but wanted to see if anyone else had experience with this.

While the unit appears to function normally -- I can play CDs, listen to radio, etc -- the trouble starts several minutes several minutes after turning on the unit. At that point I can no longer switch tracks, FF/RW, change modes, access menu, etc. Only thing I can do is adjust volume or turn unit off. Oddly, turning the unit off briefly, hardly more than one second, restores access to all the other functions. I can then change modes, skip tracks, access menu... at least until a short time later, haven't timed it but I suspect no more than a few minutes at most, the issue is back.

What may be relevant is the newer bluetooth enabled Subaru/Clarion OEM decks have a different connection for Steering Wheel Controls that earlier non-bluetooth equipped Subaru. Again, this is a 2011 stereo installed into my 2008 STi. I have left this SWC cable disconnected. Not thinking this is the cause of this issue, but it's really the only thing I can think of. It seems too regular to be a faulty unit, but I can't imagine what 'feature' this would be!

A few other issues which may or may not be normal behavior.

Bluetooth audio doesn't automatically connect any android phone I've tried. I can manually make the connection from the phone, at which point audio plays normally. I can then can skip tracks, view track info. No pause/play that I have found.

Mp3 Folder view doesn't appear to be functioning. Have tried a handful of disc I've burned, nothing happens when I try to switch folders or tracks on an Mp3 CD. Can only listen to MP3s entirely sequentially. Am wondering if perhaps this catalog/folder function is for USB or iPod connections only??

Appreciate any suggestions / thoughts on this all.
