Default no CEL on startup...

here's an interesting one for you guys . . . (and yes, i've searched, so enough of that bull****.)

i bought my MY01 RS used, back in december. i guess i never realized it, but the CEL never came on during startup - not even a brief flash, like it's supposed to. i was driving my GF's RS the other day and noticed on startup that it appeared briefly.

so, noting the dumbass crap that the previous owner did to the car (stuff i found out about after the purchase, much to my dismay - like the fact that he hollowed out the 2nd cat), i decided to pull the guage cluster out and see if he put some electrical tape in front of the bulb for the CEL (i'm guessing because of the hollowed cat); and sure enough, it was there. so, i removed it. cool, right?

well, i plugged the cluster back in and started the car, and still no CEL. what the hell? so i thought, maybe the bulb burned out . . . so i swapped it with a known good bulb, and STILL nothing!

so, my question is . . . what could he have possibly done to eliminate the CEL from flashing briefly on startup? i'm stumped...

thanks!

peter

he could have cut the wire, did you check the harness going into the cluster, could have also cut the ce signal wire at the ecu harness..

jay,

i checked the harness going into the cluster - or, at least, what i could see of it until it disappeared into the dark depths of the dashboard.

do you know what wire the CE signal wire is at the ECU? i looked at the pinout diagrams and i couldn't seem to find it...

thanks!

For my 2000 RS it's the B134 plug (bottom plug when looking at the ECU from the top as it sits in the car), pin #11 (third over from the right in the middle row).

Have a volt meter? Try checking the signal on that line. Stick that puppy into the ECU side and verify there's a signal coming out of it, then stick it at the end by the guage and verify it's receiving power.

If not one of two things could be wrong, either the wire is shot (ugly to fix) or the gauge is grounded incorrectly, not sure where the ground is on that particular light but you'll want to check that wire too.
