Default Does the 2010 STI navigation system have a traffic option?

Hi,

This is my first post. I went to Santa Monica Subaru 2 days ago to test drive a 2010 STI and ask the dealer about the navigation system. It sounds like Subaru chose Pioneer as the company to do the OEM navigation systems according to the dealer but I am hearing it might be Kenwood instead. In addition, I am hearing it might be this feature is disabled on the Subaru versions unless you hack it.

My main question was to ask the salesperson (who didn't know and said he'd have to research it) if the Nav system had some kind of traffic updates like my Alpine IWA-505 does (see image for an example).

Is there a subscription service/module you can add to the STI nav? I tried to search the forum but did not get any key words. I want to see if I should get the STI nav or install this one in the car that I will sell off.

That's frustrating. I just bought a WRX and had to go to three dealers before I found a salesperson who knew what they were talking about.

Shouldn't they know about their product if they hope to sell it? Pathetic. At least he said that he would find out for you...I guess.

Anyway, OP. From what I know, the Nav system in the Subaru is pretty limited and does not have an updated traffic feature. Many people I've talked to said that having the OEM is nice because of the factory install, but that aftermarket navs have many more features for less.

Hope this helps.

Yeah most dealership salesmen are completely ignorant of the product they are selling. Pertaining to Subarus, I've heard of salesmen saying that the WRX has a V6, 350 HP, blah blah blah. They're just in it for the money, but they should take some time to research the product so they can be a better salesmen instead of a chump

This is why you dont spend a bunch of money for factory nav systems. They are almost always subpar and not able to be updated. I remember reading an article on how cars with factory nav will have a lower resale value because you cant update the gps software. Whether thats changed who knows.

@lando - Totally true, but some of us are just so damn lazy that we get the factory nav As for updating them, Pioneer sells the update disks that will work with our Nav systems. The 2010 version is out now, but it's $270...I'll probably wait another year or so before updating the maps. I guess the upside of the factory nav is that this thing gets a GPS lock so much faster than my Garmin ever did (SirFIII chip too).

OT, but speaking of ignorant salesmen. I was with my dad at the Subaru of Livermore, and the MANAGER gave us a test drive in an 08 STi and he told me, that the newer models are more refined, nimble and don't have the boxer rumble anymore...

Yeah this salesman started 4 months ago.

This salesman said, "This navigation system is better than any aftermarket navigation out there". I didn't say anything as I wanted to "see for my self."

While getting a demo of the navigation, he said, "Of all the STI's i've sold, not one of them wanted the navigation system in the car.". We sat in a WR Blue STI and he was fumbling with the nav to see if he can show me the traffic. I wanted to see the traffic on there but it was not showing. He said he didn't want to open the manuals in the car since "it's a high end car" so he'll have to get more information on it. "I'm always finding out new things about these systems" was his comment.

When the salesperson went to get the gas paper (to get gas in the Satin White Pearl STI as it was "low"), I checked the glove compartment of the STI and found out this one had no owner's manual and it was ripped out (I assume this will be filled back in when whoever buys this one).

Now what I need to research on if this navigation thing is a wash is to see how the theft rates of WRX/STIs are. I have an Acura Integra and always feared for it disappearing. I don't fear this so much with my Acura anymore since i only drive it to work and it's in a "secured parking structure".

Well as a broken record I assume this applies to the Subaru WRX/STI world as well. Thieves will take it if they want it regardless. There are some things you can prevent like parking in a private garage, not driving to the malls, and having layers of security (I am sure there are other ones as well). I will have to search this forum for ways to deter theft in case they are slightly different than the Acura/Honda world (hood cable relocation, etc...)
