Default p1443 and trouble filling tank

I threw p1443 and it isn't the phantom one from the early 02s because I also cannot fill the gas tank because the air in the tank is not venting fast enough when I pump.

Anyone ever have both of these symptoms? Nothing is visibly wrong with the charcoal box or the hoses. I'll take it off soon and double check.

Anything else I should look at?

Bump for ideas, I have the canister off, no cracks. Hoses look fine.

I think there is water in the system. This problem only happened after the weather dropped below freezing, and is harder to fill the tank when it is colder out.

Is there anything I can put in the tank to eliminate the water? A friend mentioned a product called "Heat", anyone ever use this?

May have solved it.

One of the hoses, the one which goes to a valve then a filter then to the atmosphere.

I was feeling for cracks in the hoses, when I found this hose. It was hard, so I figured it was a metal one. Well, 30 minutes in a warm garage (which it hasn't seen in a long time) and the hose is no longer "metal".

I pull it off and dump out a ton of water and ice chunks.

Going to reset the ECU and watch it. If anyone else has this problem during the winter months, I think this may be the fix.

Still would like a comment about using "Heat" in these cars.

So I am having the same problem P1443 on my 2002 Subaru 2.5 TS. I just bought the car and had it for less then a week when this CEL came up. It looks like the canister was replaced because it looks pretty new. I will try later to take the hoses off and see if there is anything stuck in there. If that is clear which other steps can I take to try to resolve this CEL and gas filling issue? I had no issues filling my take the day I bought it, but since then it’s been a pain in the A$$... Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

42084FA120 Vent Valve

This evap vent solenoid fixed my problem, was a easy fix other than the bolts being rusted and then snapping. I just zip tied the new one in place LOL.

Make SURE there is no water in the hoses.

I had a lot. It froze again after I emptied it. 90 miles later.

Before I could empty it again, it got above freezing and the CEL went away. I still need to get out the extra water.

Not to mention only 2 of my hoses were even clamped. All the others I could remove with one hand.

Ok so i received a call back from somone at the subaru service center and i was told that there is air in the tank and that is why i cannot fill it up. The sensor in the gas cap throws this CEL and how to resolve it is to shake the car to get the air buble out. (haha) shaking the car? i mean this sounds so out of whack... has anyone heard this before i mean i heard of the "spider web" problem but shaking the car?

When you fill your tank up the air has to be displaced somewhere and since venting fuel vapousr to the atmosphere is frowned upon this is what happens:the air travels from the tank through a line, to the charcoal canister, then to the canister close valve, then to the evap filter (simple explanation). I would guess there is either a problem with the line being pinched/blocked, the canister close valve stuck closed, or a dirty/blocked evap filter.

I'm bumping this because I had the same code and replaced this part and the code hasn't come back. Just posting to help confirm that replacing the mentioned part fixes the code.

Mine were all rusted too. I snapped one of the charcoal box bolts but was able to get one of them off without breaking it. I ended up having to snap the mounting bracket on the old VV to get it off and then I just zip tied the new one. Kind of ghetto but it works and it will be much easier to snip a couple zip ties than deal with those crappy, rusty bolts again.

i have noticed while in NJ those gas station goons like to top off the tank......ALOT. this can cause gas to actually get into the canister then causing the CEL and unability to fill tank.

Well i just got this code. Thanks to mekks for posting part number. Gonna go exploring and see first if it is a simple clogged hose issue. if not i will order part and see if that fixes it. And i will then post the results.

What ended up happening? Did you replace the part or was it just a clogged hose or something?
