hey guys, i am having a problem with the car.. i was getting a check engine light for the crankshaft position sensor. i replaced the sensor and it still comes on. any ideas? also my car never wants to start in the morning. so i go to work come home and it starts right up. i dont get it but its making me crazy. i called subaru two days ago to get an estimate on a valve cover gasket because i think that is leaking too @ about 4:30pm the guy tells me i will call you in the morning.. i waited..no call. called him back at about 4:30 another guy says he will call you in 10 mins he had my name and number right there the guy never calls back so im about to call them back but i think its just plain crazy that these guys dont want my money.. has anyone changed a valve cover gasket? if so how hard is it going to be. i know its a tight fit..
PLEASE HELP. thanks, Mike

What's the exact CEL code? The service manual should have a good list of items to check to diagnose the issue with the CPS.

I've seen a few cars come in with messed up wiring for the CPS. Trace it back a bit and see if it got buggered up.

Just to add to that--a couple nasioc members had one of the wires pull right out of the electrical plug for the CPS. Looked like the wire was jammed in there, but not properly electrically connected.

and just an FYI here
WAY too many of these happen because somebody---in a galaxy long long ago......posted a DIY on doing a turbo swap....which includes instructions on how to make the car crank and not START to pre-lube the turbo.... and these instructions FALSELY and ERRONEOUSLY include the ABSOLUTELY ABSURD AND TOTALLY UNNECESSARY STEPS OF UNPLUGGING THE CAM AND CRANK ANGLE SENSORS WHICH POINTLESSLY AND NEEDLESSLY MAKES ****ING THEM UP AN ALL TOO OFTEN REALITY ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and ALL you have to do is PULL THE ****ING 'IGN' FUSE AND NO ****ING WITH THE CAM AND CRANK SENSORS IS NEEDED OR WANTED ![]() S0000000000 kiddies..........if you do any turbo swap and the instructions include disconnecting ANY sensors to pre-lube the turbo after install DON'T |

ok i figured out why she wasnt starting.. needed a new starter.. going to pick that up in a bit. now i am still needing to find out why i am getting a check engine code for the the crank position sensor..
Haelan: the exact code was/is P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction. do you have a service manual handy so i can get a good list of items to check to diagnose the issue with the CPS. i will look at the wiring when i get back from getting the starter.. thanks guys. |

You do know that a malfunctioning CPS will cause your vehicle to not start, right? How did you determine it is the starter--I'm assuming it's not cranking over?
The only thing the services manual mentions is checking the CPS (which you already replaced), the wiring harness, and the connection at the ECU. Some oil in the intercooler and throttle body is normal. Blowby tends to accumulate in those areas so unless it's a small lake of oil--don't worry about it. |

no i did not know that..
i think the starter was going because.. when i put the key in and turned it sometimes it took a second or two for the engine to start then sometimes nothing happens when i turn the key just a click when i let the key go. its been intermittent. i hit it with a screwdriver and it started. i still havent looked at the wiring yet. so i will check that. whats the best stuff to clean the intercooler with? will brake cleaner work or should i just simple green it. |

check the wiring to the cps. i had my one wire literally fall out of the connector to the cps and the car still started but drove HORRIBLE. it eventually stopped starting and wouldnt turn over. I got a spare connector, soldered it on and havent had a single cps issue since.
