I'm debating rooting my Nexus One. I kinda want to keep my warranty though.

Separate deal, and you'll probably get prompted to install it the next time you come here on Android.

So if the browser detects that you are on a forum site it prompts you to install the forum app? Once installed, the next time you visit a forum site in the browser does it switch over to the forum viewer app automatically or does it prompt you?

Bump... because I'm still curious about this. When you go to a site like nabisco does it ask you if you want to view the page in the forum app? Or does it just launch it automatically? Or do you have to launch it separately and browse to the forum yourself?

Why don't you try it?

It prompted me the first time to install the app. Not sure if it'll do it again.

Because i don't have an android yet ... i've still got a year left on my at&t contract ftl

I think I'm gonna grab a used t-mobile mytouch or g1 off craigslist for $100 to play around with (and use it on at&t edge/wifi)... root it, install Android 2.x, play around with it- then when my contract is up I'll either switch to T-Mobile and use that phone or sell it on ebay and buy an N1 (and maybe go to VZN if they've got it out then).

Well, if you just want to play:

http://developer.android.com/guide/d.../emulator.html

There are Android installs for many HTC phones. I had one on my Touch, so you might be able to get that to work for ya. Or you could get an N1 now and use it on AT&T and suffer with Edge downloads.

Maybe. My problem is that around here AT&T coverage is slightly above mediocre, T-Mobs is slightly below. Since the Alltel merger VZN kicks ass here; 3G everywhere. I'm kinda waiting to see if AT&T or T-Mob step up their coverage here (and to see the upcoming ATT android devices). I'd like to stick with a GSM phone if possible, but if VZN is still killing them in coverage in a year I may switch. So I don't want to have a GSM N1 if I won't be able to use it on VZN (though I know I could sell it).

Hmmm... i see HTC Touch's selling for cheap on CL as people dump them for N1's and the iphone 3G&S... that might be a viable option for tinkering with android. How does it perform with android?

I downloaded tapatalk a few days ago and no thanks. It's OK, but I actually prefer the browser.

same here. The only thing I like about tapatalk is it's easier to get to PMs and it's nice to see the 10 most recent topics. But I still prefer the browser

Our exchange admin is very adamant about "no third party software support". He wants the support to be native.

I thought TouchDown just circumvented the policies by tricking the server into thinking the phone was compatible? I have heard there is another version out now that may or may not actually support the policies, but it still comes back to me not wanting to piss of the exchange admin.

Google has a mobile OS to be sure they have a platform to push their services. Apple has been shaky lately, and MS wants to push their own.
With Android they are guaranteed access because it's their own platform.
