After a week with Android, here are my thoughts:

1. I generally love it. So smooth and intuitive; every bit as friendly as an iphone and IMO the UI is worlds better than blackberry or WinMo 6.x.

2. The features of WiSyncPlus should have come built into the OS. It's probably my most valuable app. It really extended my G1's fairly lousy battery life. Now it's very acceptable.

3. I don't think I'd want and Android (or any smartphone for that matter) without a qwerty keyboard. Multitouch or not. I use it way too much, and who wants to play games on an emulator with your fingers in the way of part of the action?

4. Coming from a WinMo phone, I MISS SKYFIRE!!!! Yeah the Android browser is more responsive than Skyfire, but since Skyfire renders everything remotely and then displays it on your device, all the goodies like Flash work great on it. IIRC Opera Mobile does the same thing. Can't wait for one of these to get ported over (or maybe Adobe will one day release Flash for Android...)

5. Thanks to FartDroid, my 3yr old son has mastered the UI of my phone...

Anybody play Robo Defense? Pretty addictive game. Brings back memories of Total Annihilation (though you only play defense in this game, as the name implies).

I picked up Robo Defense over the weekend and it is pretty addicting. I may have to play a game during lunch.

Somebody just posted this temporary workaround for the absence of having animated GIF files:

Quote:
I've created a temporary solution that works for me when viewing individual animated
GIFs. In android browser go to:

nolanpro.com/?f=[url to animated gif]

Works for NWS radar loops:

http://nolanpro.com/?f=http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/lite/N0R/AMA_loop.gif

Uses javascript css php imagemagick voodoo to kinda mimic the animated gif. Its not
perfect, but works for me. Open to suggestions. Thanks!
It would be cool if he created a plugin for the Android browser so that you could just touch a GIF file and choose an option to "Open with nolanpro.com"... maybe he's working on that.

Firefox for Android loads its first page:

Porting work has begun in earnest, and this is full desktop Firefox for MIDs. Once that gets finalized, Fennec/FFmobile are super easy to port as well.

Exciting! (Fennec is the fantastic browser in the Nokia N900)

Just got a mytouch, and tried getting tapatalk, for some reason it won't find it. I've gone to the site, and even just scanned the code and it won't find it. Any ideas?

I apologize for being a complete newb.

Gah, Im tired of waiting for someone to port and/or ATT to release Android phones, so in April, my wife and I are likely off to VZW again.

^ this is very good news, though I'd be more excited if Opera Mobile 10 (or 11) or Skyfire showed up on Android with flash support.

Seconded. I prefer using the browser as well. Tapatalk won't be free for much longer, and IMO it's not worth paying for. If it had a forum search feature it might be worthwhile I guess.

If you don't want to leave AT&T and you don't mind not having 3G you can get a T-Mobile phone of CL for cheap and unlock it (that's what I did since I still have a year on my ATT contract and don't want to pay to break it). For browsing pages and downloading apps EDGE is adequate for me, and there's always wifi.

Or you can get on ebay and buy a Canadian Rogers telco Android phone (they have three IIRC- the HTC Dream (aka G1), the HTC Magic (aka myTouch3G), and the LG Eve. Since Rogers was formerly an AT&T affiliate they use the same 2G & 3G networks, so an unlocked Rogers phone will work on AT&T's 2G and 3G networks.

Well, I use mine to tether when Im on the road, so 3G is a fairly big deal to me. EDGE, while painful on the phone, is unusuable on a laptop.

Edit: Her corporate discount with VZW is much better than mine with ATT too.

I really miss Skyfire. It was nice being able to go to adthe.net and watch a live football game on my WinMo phone.

Just FYI, AT&T will be releasing several Android phones in 2010. Five, I think. I'm kinda lukewarm about that news. On one hand it's great to have Android devices on the AT&T frequencies, but on the other hand it means that even if you buy one of those particular models unlocked, they'll recognize it and force you into the $30/month data plan. And I'm a cheapass who thinks $30/month is too much to spend for the amount of data that I use.

Alright got a question for the ole lady. She has a Cliq running on Tmo with android V1.5. Her stupid phone constantly "reboots" when she gets phone calls. It's kind of funny from my end, but if I were her, I'd throw the bastard out the window.

Anyone had this problem? Does she just need to update to 2.0 or something?

Hmm... weird. What apps/widgets is she running?

You can try clearing the call log, maybe that will help. I would bet a reset would fix it, but I hate to recommend that. I'd try the Android forums.

In other news, here is the GeeksPhone One:
http://androidandme.com/2010/02/news...eeksphone-one/
It ships rooted, running a modded version of donut.

I guess I'm going with VZN after all... I was just at Best Buy and saw this sweet phone for $99 with a contract... the Motorola Devour:

Quote:
"We knew it was coming and now the Motorola Devour is official. Motorola sent out the press release today and already has the phone up on their site. No release date was given, but we know the device is headed to Verizon in March with the full suite of Verizon Premium Services such as VZ Navigator and VCast.

The Devour features Motoblur and is powered by Android 1.6. This is an enhancement over recent Motorola phones like the CLIQ, Backflip, and Zeppelin which all featured Android 1.5. We know the CLIQ is getting updated to Android 2.1 in Q2 2010 and we expect Motorola will do the same with the Devour.

For some odd reason Motorola chose not to reveal the CPU, RAM, and ROM of the Devour on the official spec sheet. We know from our sources that the Devour features the 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7627, which is an improvement over other Motorola phones. My guess is Motorola is trying to sell the features of this phone and not its specs.

The Devour will include a version of Adobe Flash Lite, which is a first for Motorola Android phones."

The keyboard is 10x better than the Droid's, and it has an aluminum housing instead of plastic. It feels very high quality. 600mhz/256MB RAM is more than adequate, the only downside is that it only ships with Android 1.6... but a 2.1 update is on the horizon.

How bad is this CPU? Is it just not overclockable or is it a battery hog?
