Default Pre 2001 subaru buying guide?

well after my initial plans of buying a 2003-2004 WRX fell through because of the economy, not that im struggling but i just rather not spend 10k+ on a secondary car. So i'm looking at cheaper alternatives.

i really want to stick with a subaru, simply because of the awd. this vehicle will be my shop car for advertising, deliveries, errands and such. and will also double as my winter snowboarding car. lol

anyways, i'm open to any car that is awd and manual. currently a 1998 legacy caught my eye but my biggest question after driving the wrx is do any of the older subaru's come with a turbo stock? or which ones are more so fun to drive.

biggest plans for the car will be to lower it, put some clean wheels on it, and some vinyl advertising on the sides.

p.s. sorry for the long read.

Only the older Legacies offered in the US come with turbos, the Imprezas don't.

P.S. That's not a long read, people on NASIOC are just lazy.

2005+ turbo were 2.5GT

But if you are looking for a pre-01 they were offered 91-94, with a 2.2 turbo. 91-94 for sedan (sport sedan), and 92-94 for a wagon (touring wagon). If you can find them, they are good cars. But, they are aging, and finding a decent one is becoming pretty difficult.

The N/A 2.5 engines tend to have head gasket issues, especially the earlier DOHC ones. 2.2 engines are pretty reliable.

Take a look at the Wiki page on Subarus and the EJ engines, there is a lot of factual information. I was surprised by how detailed some of those engine specs went.
