I purchased 4 VAG COMS from AlphaBid on ebay.....good presents for subie friends.

So far I pulled a LV and was able to log my 2006 STi no problems......

Cable is excellent quality and fits nice and snug into the OBD2 port. Has a way better feel than the Tactrix 2.0 cable.

Has anyone ever gotten any generic Tactrix cable to connect to their '02/'03 WRX ECU using Ecuflash? Sadly, I'm starting to think it just isn't possible.

I've tried
  • Different drivers
  • Different ports
  • Different laptops
  • Different versions of Ecuflash
  • Turning the car on at every time interval imaginable
  • Different combinations of the test mode connectors and the flash block connector

It's extremely misleading when these cables are advertised to FLASH a bugeye ECU when it in fact CANNOT

RomRaider works great, Ecuflash does not.

EDIT:
Just received an e-mail from Cody with Busted Finger Motorsports (the vendor I purchased mine from).

He confirms he has tested this cable (VAG COM basically) with a bugeye, but that it's ALL about timing.

I have a 2011 WRX, and all I want to do is log (not reflash).

Would I only need a Vag-Com cable from eBay, and the RomRaider software?

I have a 2007 WRX, and am basically doing what you posted below. Although, I am flashing as well.

the biggest hurdle is the drivers, the easiest way for me was to manually set them - not allowing RomRaider to automatically install the drivers.

Old vag-com cable bought on ebay used during my vw passat days....works like a charm

Good luck

Regards,

Well, I got the Vag Com cable from my brother's Audi days. It's just the $10 thing you get on eBay. I manually installed the drivers and set up Rom Raider Logger for my laptop. Once I had all that done, I didn't have an problem getting it to communicate with my car.

I logged for maybe 15 min and then it stopped communicating with my computer. I unplugged the USB from my computer and then reconnected it, and everything was fine again. I did a couple 3rd gear pulls and threw them in Virtual Dyno. Stage 2 line is from today. The other two runs are from my Stage 1 tune with my tuner (using a Tactrix cable).

Great for someone who only wants to log, and not tune. Very cheap and works well!

This is EXACTLY what I want to do with my 09 LGT. I have a Vag-Com rev 2.10 cable and I want to log to RomRaider. I see reference to drivers. What drivers do I need and where can I get them?

Thanks

I have an 09 LegacyGT which is DBW/CAN bus and I want to buy a Vag-Com cable just to do logging. I know it will not work for flashing, but it looks like there are numerous success stories using it for logging.

I am looking at cables from ebay from Alpha-bid (mentioned a few times in the post) and he has $18.00 cables and $63.00 CAN Bus cables. So my question is: Do I need a CAN Bus cable just to do logging?

If anyone has purchased a cable, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Mine is the non CAN BUS type. Shouldn't matter for logging only. It was $10 shipped. Not sure where he got it from though.

Just gave it a whirl and could not connect to the ECU with either RomRaider or LearningView. I only have com3 listed as a connect option. When I installed the cable Win7x64 found a driver for the Ross-Tek cable. I didn't need to install the FTDI drivers.....wondering if that is the problem.

I am thinking about rebuilding the laptop with 32 bit XP and trying the FTDI drivers.

Does anyone know how well the actual ross-tech vag-com cable works compared to the cheap ones? I have a brand new hex-can+bus cable and just bought it along with vag-com last month to do some scanning on my gti and my dads jetta, along with doing some coding for a bunch of friends' mk5's. I was all set on getting a UTEC and was told about opensource tuning and found this which is awesome.

I know your post is old now, but in case you're still looking for data points...

I had a 2005 LGT and an eBay VAG-COM KKL cable that worked perfectly for logging (RomRaider & Learning View), reading the ECU image (latest at the time version of EcuFlash), and writing the ECU image (EcuFlash).

I tried logging (RomRaider & Learning View) on two different 2002 WRX's, and that same cable worked just fine. But I could not get ECU reading or reflashing to work on those WRX's.

I too tried tons of driver/EcuFlash version combinations, including a very old school EcuFlash version that let you pick a COM port. I tried multiple laptops (always Windows XP 32-bit). I even tried ecuExplorer. No go.

A little while later an OpenPort 2.0 read the ECU image off one of those WRX's on the first try.

In short, if you want to reflash a 16-bit Subaru ECU, you need a real OpenPort cable/adapter. Why, I do not know

I don't think people with 32-bit ecu's are having as much trouble as people with the 16-bit ecu's (02-05wrx)

I just bought the vagcom cable, learning view worked, download the newest version of ecuflash along with the drivers that ecuflash came with, and i was able to pull the map off.
I cannot get a full log from romraider though, It cuts out halfway everytime.
I have even had this issue with a tactrix 2.0 cable.

Anyone else have this issue?
