Default Viper 5701 2-way alarm/starter for $114

Ok, is this a good deal, and is it a good starter? (don't care as much about the alarm)

I know someone on here knows....

Here's a better deal:

Amazon.com: Python 991 Responder LC3 SST Security/Remote Start System: AutomotiveAmazon.com: Python 991 Responder LC3 SST Security/Remote Start System: Automotive

I have the Viper 5901, which is the same as the Python 991. It's awesome.

Also, the one you posted is a refurb. Not sure if you caught that...

Nothing wrong with refurb, I've bought refurb cameras and laptops and had no issues.

i can't stand those remote starts. my boss has the 5901 the hd version of the lc3 the range blows especially for being an sst. i had an LE on my car. at that time i also never put my dash 100 percent back together cause i was always troubleshooting it or having to pull power cause it was really screwy. from what i understand though is dei fixed alot of the firmware issues so the new ones may be better...

I have a 991 and it isn't bad as far as range. Haven't really tried to test it's true range yet.
Definitely going to get the SmartStart as soon as it comes out for the Blackberry though.

It's cool, but expensive. Surprised this idea hasn't been more used up to this point, actually.

Seascooby: I know, I've been trying to steer clear of DEI, but they make the majority of systems at this point. If I could find a decent autostart for about the same price I'd be all over it.

Why are you trying to stay clear of DEI, just a question. If you aren't interested in DEI try autopage. They make a great quality product at a pretty good price.

The Smart Start isn't to bad on price $30 a year plus a $300 mod(retail).

I've been hearing bad things about them lately. Mostly stories of stuff not working or not working right. I honestly don't care what I get as long as it's affordable and works reliably.

the cell phone concept has been around for awhile. but you know how it goes with the i phone.... there's an app for that. it blew up you know? the crappy thing is with the mod to use the iphone and the cheapest autostart it works with you're still in for around the price of a good two way unit.

And don't forget about the monthly access fee which I think is $10.99

You basically have another cell phone monthly fee with the cell starters, yeah not too much really since it's a basic plan I guess. What is the advantage of a cell phone starter? Could start your car in Anchorage from Senor Frogs in Cancun I guess.... I dunno why you would, but you could.

I have the 5901 and the range is on par with the Compustar models with SST. It's all in how you do the installation and where you place the antenna, if it's too close to the roof or if you have windows with a metal base tint it kills your range. I get a half mile range with mine which is enough. I can start it from inside any building.

From my experience the DEI is better than the Compustar but I haven't installed the new CM5200 Compustar, the remotes look awesome. So expensive though. It's like $400 just for the 2 mile color remote.

mandrake- i hear you on the installation. you can ask matthew1316 or jdavis20 about how pissed i get if it's not perfect. i'm m not a compustar dealer so i really haven't been able to play with the new ones yet either. i've done plenty of scosche and arctic starts.
now don't get me wrong dei does have some great product. but on a customer basis it's not reliable enough and i want something a bit more user friendly. i loose money when i have to trouble shoot cars or step out of a car to walk them through 487 button combos to view some sort of info on a remote...
on an installer basis troubleshooting constant failures which they have acknoledged but have yet to fix. a big ass brain with a crappy wiring harness layout to try and throw under cars with factory cluster ****ed wiring...not fun. lol

on the range i hear ya a half a mile is plenty for me and most people. but with a viper hd that's supposed to have up to a mile and i can't even hit the car from less than 40ft away from in my house... kinda of a waste to throw big money down if i can't even hit the car from outside of my house you know?

Pretty sure the iphone app for VIPER which i currently have is free.... Atleast i didnt pay for it and it works just as good as the remote (or so i was told) dont have an autostart to try it on because i have been looking for the right one and havent heard the best things about viper.. so just my 2 cents

Yeah something is definitely wrong if it doesn't work more than 40 feet away. I would be willing to guess that the antenna is completely not plugged in. Does the blue light on the antenna blink? It might be faulty or something.
On the user friendliness neither Compustar or DEI really supports end user installs. It seems like they rely %100 on dealers so if you install it yourself, you're on your own. But the instructions are top notch. It's only when you run into a problem and something doesn't work that you get in trouble. But there are enough people that have done these that we could support you on the forums. It is kind of frustrating at first but once you get it working it's easy.

Yeah I was going to say if it's using cell networks there is no way they'll let you use that for free when they charge per megabyte for downloads.

Currently have a bid on one of the 5701's that is pretty low but so far holding up. Guess we'll see what happens. Also would need the bypass module doohicky for my truck.

everything is legit on the autostart. it's just crap...

i work at northstart so when i say user friendliness i don't mean as far as installs. i mean as far as the 40 or 50 year old lady who wants something with range so you throw in a viper which is way too complicated for what it is and has too many button codes for information that you don't really need... i think they over engineered the unit and remote and capabilities yet didn't focus on what was needed.....serious do i really need to know the temp in my car? not really...run time yeah...ok it's been running for 15 20 min i should be good. know what i mean?
