Default 35% window tint in NY

Getting my first tint on a car this Saturday. 35%.

Anyone able to share stories about NY cops and tint? Do they generally leave you alone for the tint unless they get you for some other moving violation?

35% is a good darkness without being too much hassle but of course it is still illegal in NY

Well I could tell you how it is in NYC. I have 5% in 1 car and 35% all around in my wrx. 2 weeks ago when it was like 65 I had my windows almost all the way down and I got stopped for tint JUST as I was leaving my parking spot. Good thing I had my PBA card so I just showed him it along with my license and was let go.

Here in NYC the percent doesn't even matter tbh, either you'll get stopped with 5 or 50 depending the cop. In my other car I've driven the past whole year with 5% all around and haven't been stopped. Its just luck I would say.

+1 I've had tints on my cars usually 20% for over 20 years. I get stopped once in a while for tints. It's just luck of the draw. I had my trailblazer ss for 6 years and never got stopped. I had the my Focus st for 2 years and got stopped twice.

it's going to be luck of the draw - technically any tint % offered is illegal on your windows, with the exception rear windshield which under law can be tinted any % and you cannot be ticketed for so long as you have 2 functioning side view mirrors. Cops of course aren't polished on this law and think it applies, but it doesn't (I have corrected several officers and shown them highlighted copies of the tint laws to back it up). My best suggestion is get your 2 front windows tinted lighter than the rear 2 and the back glass to at least give the appearance you aren't trying to be seen.

But, it's just going to be a time and place thing, especially towards the ends of the month depending on the neighborhood you live in when the quotas they say don't exist need to be filled. And summer is coming, so plenty more check points

I have 25% all around and haven't been stopped since getting the tints applied.

Default 35% window tint in NY

The pro's are protection from the sun and privacy. The cons are that if you get stopped by a cop that wants to be an ass hat, youll get a ticket for each window thats tinted.

I have 35% all around now with no problem. Used to have 20% all around in my G35X and also had no problem. Usually they won't stop you just for tints, but if you get stopped for something else, they will write you down for the tints as well. It all depends on the particular cop though.

My friend got stopped just for his tints and he has 35% all around.

It just depends on how much you value your tints against the risk of getting a ticket for them.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully Buffalo cops aren't too bad, and they're busy dealing with the drugs and gun fire on the south side

I did see a Porsche 911s couple days ago with what had to be 5% on the side and rear windows.

5% in the rear cargo area, 20 in the rear passenger seats and 35 in the front. I have never been stopped in NYC and I've been back here for 5 years now. I was pulled over for a moving violation in White Plains once and the cop also visually checked my tint but that was it.

It sounds like you will take your chances with all the various and different stories from everyone.

My buddy just went through the police academy (wont say which one but its a county in NY) and I've brought this up with him multiple times. Hes pretty much said what others have provided but he did provide me with a loophole . Apparently if you can provide the DMV with a signed doctors note stating that you have skin sensitivity to the sun they will provide you with a sticker that allows any tint to be legal on your car all around.

It's not even a loophole because now it's extremely hard to receive that waiver even with a doctor signature. It has to be a VERY concrete issue; which basically is a life or death situation. My buddy tried and instantly got shut down.

Default 35% window tint in NY

I don't know the technicalities of the NY tint law but I got a prescription from my optometrist stating I have photophobia (sensitive to bright light). It worked when I got pulled over for nothing more than tint & a clear license plate cover.
Even though the law at the time required me to get a special plate for the tint, I think I got off with a warning.
So go see your eye doctor.
I am really sensitive to bright light though bc of my high prescription, -11.00 in both eyes. I think that's legally blind. Lol.
I got pulled over in a suburb of Chicago & the tint law back then was no tint on the front 2 side windows & I had 33% all around.

From personal experience in NYC it really depends on what neighborhoods you're in. Cops have different agendas within different precincts. I live in the Bronx and have been pulled over a couple times in my friends Impala for tints even though they were legal.

anything less than 70% is illegal, i have 15% and almost every time I'm in bayside/queens i get pulled over, good thing i know a few sergeants. From my experience its only queens cops that pull me over and i spend most of my time in nassau, i have never been pulled over in nassau for it but its honestly different from cop to cop. Try and get yourself a PBA card of something and you'll be fine.
