Default What gauge wire do I need?

I'm wiring in two switches to my WRX, one switch for the ABS, and one switch for the ignition(crude anti-theft device). I don't have my owner's manual with me now, but I know that both the fuses for the ABS and the ignition are under 30 amps. The two switches I will be using are rated at 30 amps, so I am ok there.

When I went to the hardware store to buy wire, I bought 12 gauge. Can 12 gauge handle 30 amps at ~ 12V?

Thanks for your time guys.

12 gauge should be fine, from what I remember... there are technical ways to figure this out, but basically, I know I've got spools of 14 or 16 gauge (all different colors, but I forget what gauge, and the labels are gone) and it's fatter than just about all the wiring in any car (or motorcycle) that I've ever seen.

Rule of thumb: replace/splice in wire that's at least as fat as the wiring that you're splicing into. So if the ABS and ignition wires aren't fatter than what you've bought to wire in your switches, you're fine. If your new wire is much fatter... then you've added several unnecessary grams of weight to your car and wasted several cents on buying overkill wire... no big deal.
