Default New to tuning. will a dp force me to run stage2 with the Cobb AP??

A guy totaled his STi and wants to sell me one of the DP's he has for it. (has two, megan racing 3" and a Turbo XS 4")
If my car (05 wrx w/only SPT exhaust) now has a turboback, does that force me to go to stage 2. how will that effect my fuel economy?
can i still run a less aggressive map some of the time for better fuel mileage or does it not work like that....?

if its flexible then i'm going to go ahead and buy one of his downpipes
(not sure which is better but he only wants $75 for either of them)
285hp sounds nice when compared to stock!

i'm new to this; help me out please.

If you have an AP already. Go for it. Fuel economy is fine with mine. Can't exactly quote it as better, but certainly no worse. You will be very happy you did. COBB has a fuel economy map you can use at times if you really wanted as well.

The downpipe lets the exhaust gas flow more easily (in simple terms) so you increase power, and yes, you should use the Stage 2 map (that's the "tune" aspect to this). If you manage your right foot, your gas mileage is not going to drop like a rock. The risk is that you will notice more immediate power and response, so if you get addicted to the rush, you will hurt your fuel economy, but it's not the stage 2 map's fault ;-).

I can't speak to the Megan vs. TurboXS downpipes, but there are a bazillion threads you can read about on those (just search). Either way $75 is a deal. Heck, buy both of them, pick one, and sell the other for a profit.

I may be wrong on this, but I am pretty sure that you can use a DP without a tune. You will not be utilizing the full capabilities, but I do not believe it is harmful to your car. All it does it make the exhaust flow more freely.

Not sure how the '05 wastegates respond, but 02-03 models could get some unwanted wastegate opening with a catless DP and no engine management.

stay away from megan products....shoddy work/production at best...there is a reason why they are the CHEAPEST. a preset map from cobb or perrin will adjust your ecu good but a pro tune will; have your car dialed for there are many slight variations such as elevation, fuel type, air intake etc....a pro tune will further enhance the performance of your pre set tuning maps to get the most out of your turbo back exhaust

It is not a good idea to run a dp without a tune. This does cause better flow which causes the car to take in more air which then leads to a leaner mixture. That then leads to higher EGT's and possible piston damage, especially with the close/open loop issues that 04-05's have.
