While an equalizer is what does this, it's overkill for me. I'm not an audiophile, and currently there's no way to extract optical audio from the iPad (though I am hopeful). What I'm really looking for is a simple volume control ability -- Ideally one that I can steering wheel mount or is small enough to fit in one of my pop out placeholders to the left of the steering column.

If you have an extra Audison bit one, I'll be happy to test it out for you! What I make, though, is the bezel. I wouldn't dream of selling the iPad or any Apple accessories. Not only is the "Apple Added Value Reseller" a PITA tag to get, but I don't want to take on the liability when someone inevitably crashes while watching a movie and decides it was my fault. F that game.

Edit: I think I'm just talking about a Line Level Controller, no?

Sorry I meant I could be a another tester of your dash piece!

The output of the dock is just a 1/8th headphone jack right? So the voltage output is very low and you would need a way to control volume since while docked you lose that ability from the iPad if I understand you correctly. The audison bit one and rockford 360 would take that 1/8" headphone jack in via a 1/8th jack to left/right rca cable and bump the voltage up some for your amplifiers as well as giving you a volume knob so now you can control the volume of whatever was playing from the iPad into your amps and also you would gain a separate front/rear/sub out.

The audison has a little mini display with a volume knob and a couple of buttons and the Rockford 360 has just a volume knob which is also a button. Rockford's knob would be the easiest to mount to one of the button blanks. The Rockford piece is also cheaper than the audison piece. That is probably the way I would go if these dash pieces go into production. Both also provide very high eq capabilities that you basically tune with a pc.

Just saw your edit about that jl piece. That would work but you have no eq control and no separation of front/rear/sub channels if you have amps. I guess technically you could split that signal 3 times and use the crossovers on an amp but still you have no bass/mid/treble controls.

Now that I'm thinking of it, the audison piece really is the way to go instead of the rockford piece! From the display you can select from some eq presets as well as control volume and fade/balance/etc.

Haha well I'm not a registered vendor on here so I can't really pimp the product, but it will be available soon(ish). Likely 8 weeks timeframe.

NASIOC has just been a really good source for concepts and feedback and that's what this post was all about. So far I'm very happy with the general feedback.

I completely understand and agree. Keep us in the loop though! I'm gonna need one unpainted though since I have the flat black spec c dash.

Thumbs up placement

Just out of curiosity, why did you want the IPad up and down as oppose to wide screen left to right display? I am sure that it wouldn't fit in the space allotted but if you are designing it to be custom in the first place couldn't you have had it extend outward towards the center console on the passenger side so it is angled at the driver and creating a bit more space to go widescreen? I am guessin that it is probably more trouble than it is worth. This seems like a pretty cool idea. It would be nice if Apple could see this and move create a new car audio / HU division. With the apps they have the possibilities are limitless. Very curious to see the finished product.
On a separate note my wife things the idea is insane haha, thinks that there is too much you can do on it and a cell phone is enough of a distraction alone. I disagree, you mess with the stereo while you drive in the first place and if you have a gps you mess with that too. Its just capable of being a better or at least a high competitor for all other multimedia HU's. Props for being the ingenuity.

Ipad in a car? It's an innovative idea..but it is too bulky looking imho...and with all the apps it seems like it would be way too distracting to use while driving....I think double din head units that fit right in factory opennings will eventually have all this built in anyway, and most of the good ones between 400-500 have nav bluetooth and can connect USB already, but with the dedicated audio technology to back it all up with great sound...this IPad just seems like an dimensionally larger Iphone with total touchscreen control....almost like it was reverse engineered from the Iphone. Anyway dont get me wrong I think it is cool, just not practical in a car unless you absolutely need the internet while driving...otherwise its a novelty. If you do a youtube search of Ipad in car or Ipad in subie you''ll find some installs already becomming common.

Thanks! I actually really wanted it to be in landscape mode (movies obviously look much better, and certain apps - Pandora, ESPN Score Zone, and many others - also have a lot more functionality displayed in landscape), but the room just isn't there. Could I have extended it out so that it didn't impact the rest of the dash? Yes, and pretty easily, in fact. However, I'm all about maintaining the OEM look. I think I did a pretty good job of that, trying to take as many features from the OEM bezel as possible.

That's the (mandatory) price you pay for the rotating functionality. This concept was actually done a while ago by one of the members of the mp3car forums - VegasNate. Check it out in his 2008 Pontiac G8 GT. You'll see that, eventually, he ditched the swivel mechanism to allow for better looking integration. I think that's something that you'll find a lot of people desire after having it for a while.

If the scosche guys just ditched the center vents I think this would have looked a lot better, as you're now not blocking 1/2 the windshield.

Yeah I looked into the servo option a lot, actually (as I use them in some of my test setups at work). You'd either have to lose the OEM look or relocate the HVAC, both of which I wasn't a fan of. SUVs have sooo much real estate to work with, it's like cheating.

If you guys want to bash the iPad, go do it in the iPad thread in the Off Topic section. Whatever you guys are posting has nothing to do with the OP's topic.

@ jr4284,

just stumbled on this thread great design, and concept, nice work. Hopefully the iPad will be capable of being implemented as intended in the near future!

Custom bezel snaps right into place of OEM bezel, using same mounts/screws. HVAC transfers over the same. Nothing changes.

You can see I"m using the iPad dock. I have power coming in over a simple USB connection spliced into my cig lighter, so I'm charged/charging at all times. Headphone out jack to equalizer to amp.

looking good! Where did you relocate the hazard to?

And because you said you have it powered by a usb spliced into 12v, i have to ask...How are you running your speakers?

that would be great. i give it 70:30 you're joking, but i'd love to see it.

i heard windows 7 has full touch screen support and was supposed to be used for the HP-Slate [better ] iPad style device, so maybe it's possible. although i heard they ditched windows in favor of the new touch-based palm-os , so maybe it sucks on a touch device. would probably need custom drivers though, so who knows.

anyway, please post if anyone finds any info of a ipad running windows.

The screen seems far too reflective to be any good in a car. I have the macbook with the same shiny screen and I can hardly see it if I am in any type of sunlight without the brightness all the way up.
