Quick Update:

Prototype #3 went out for production today. I believe this will be the final prototype and be perfect. I've been working with a distributor to set up sales and the rest (they are registered on this forum). I wanted to send them the last prototype so they could make a video of it's features, etc, and get it posted... Alas, no one had a 05-07 Imprez/WRX/STi, so I filmed it all myself and sent them the raw video. Hopefully they don't make me look like too much of a goober.

I'll also be playing around with some jailbroken apps in the next few days. I'm especially interested in gesture-based apps like Activator. Backgrounder, OpenSSH, and Wi-Fi Sync will also be getting a run through.

Also, if anyone is in the Baltimore area on June 3rd, there is the Baltimore iPad Event that I think I'll be attending. Decent chance to check out the bezel in person.

Congrats!

As for the JB stuff, Backgrounder is awesome as always. I've noticed just a slight bit of flakiness, but nothing to worry about.

I also use MyWi with my iPhone hotspotting for the iPad and it's bulletproof. I will probably continue that with my car iPad install rather than get a 3G model and pay the monthly fee. Unless I decide to dump SiriusXM and then I could apply that money toward the bandwidth.

WiFi Sync at present does not support iPad but I'm hoping they get around that limitation. I'm guessing that feature is coming to iPhone OS 4.0 or Apple would have allowed it into the app store.

Can you run down your electronics in this system please? I'm not totally clear how youvegot it all hooked together.

Thanks!

The setup is super easy.

Kicker Amp.
Absolute RSW250 (volume control...)

Apple iPad dock
RCA-RCA cable
RCA-3mm cable

Step 1: Remove stock bezel (2 screws, 4 snap tabs) and stock vents (3 screws, 1 crossbar, 1 hazard button). Relocate hazard to the left of your steering column, if you want, but put it somewhere.

Step 2: Put iPad dock in bezel assembly. Screw in HVAC unit.

Step 3: Connect RCA-3mm from your audio out on the iPad dock to the input on the RSW250, and the RCA-RCA from the output on the RSW250 to your amp.

Step 4: Secure in bezel using exact same method as OEM bezel (2 screws, 4 snap tabs).

Done!

Having had a carputer for years, this is so infinitely simpler it's almost ridiculous.

I also went for the 3G version, but I have no intention of paying the monthly subscription... I wanted the GPS antenna, that's it (and it's worth it for car use).

Guess I need to get better at asking questions...

Your Kicker amp; which model is it?

How is it integrated into the stock wiring harness?

Does it have control of the stock underseat sub?

Where have you located the amp?

Is it powered from the battery directly?

Where is the RSW250 mounted?

And good point on the 3G and its GPS. Hadn't thought of that.

Dah, not sure of the exact amp model, but I believe it's 200W RMS 2 channel with Signal-to-noise > 95dB. I'm not a hardcore audiophile, but this does the trick.

It's powered the same way any amp is powered. Hook it up to the battery with the appropriate in-line fuse. Find your 12V "pulse" line to your stereo (it's the blue line 99.9% of the time) and splice into that, have it run into the "remote" plug on the amp. This way it turns on/off with your car, just as your stock radio does. Ground it to the chassis. I'm not an expert in electrical engineering or car audio installations, but there's lots of good instructional threads within the NASIOC community.

The '06 STi doesn't have an under seat sub, so I guess that answers that.

The amp sits under my passenger seat.

Right now the RSW250 is mounted with velcro to the right of the shifter. I'm still playing around with locations before finalizing the install. I'm also considering putting it in one of the pop-out tabs to the left of the steering column, though then the passenger has no volume control (which may or may not matter to you).

*Edit* Oh, and the RSW250 should be replaced with an equalizer. If you already have one, then the RSW250 isn't needed. Like I said, I'm not an audiophile. The system sounds fine to my ear, but I know a lot of people that want to be able to run really in depth tweaking on their sound. For that, you need an equalizer, which costs anywhere from $100-thou$ands. Bottom line, you need a way to control the volume, as you lose volume control when you've docked the iPad... it just says "dock connector" in place of the volume slider. I chose the $13 route.

Hey guys, major update time...

We're getting really close to a release. I made some videos for the distributor, who just hosted them recently. Check them out, let me know what you think!

Also, please head over to www.mp3car.com and vote for the next car to have the iPad integrated in. This is a fun project for me, but it's really driven by the community. (Mods, if this is over the line, please just delete what's necessary and shoot me a PM)

Awesome work! How long do we have to wait and will we be able to get these unpainted?

I'm a perfectionist and I wouldn't sell anything that I wasn't completely proud of. That said, the model you're looking at in the videos is 98% there. 2 spots didn't have the perfect fit and I felt the bosses for the HVAC mounts were a little too frail. Those issues have been addressed now, and the (final) prototype is due in to me on this Wednesday.

Barring any unforeseen events, production tooling will begin immediately, and 6 weeks later parts will begin shipping. So all told, we're probably looking at a 7 week lead time right now.

As far as painted vs. not painted, they will all come painted to match the OEM color scheme. The logistics of having some % unpainted and some % painted really just get confusing for the distributor, so I won't put that burden on them. Unfortunately, you're in the minority as far as wanting an unpainted bezel.

Now, there's no reason you can't paint right over it... just give it a light application of sanding, clean it up, paint away. Or plasti-dip it. Or Rhino line it. Go crazy folks, go crazy.

Couldn't you just use this setup in the picture below to keep your stereo?
You could use your prototype to dock/plug in the ipad the same way you would plug in an ipod/iphone?

I realize this specific picture is not an 05-07 but you get the idea..

Couple things I think you're missing:
1) thats not the stock radio. They replaced the OEM radio with an aftermarket head unit and mounted it where the stock clock went. You can still do that with this kit.
2) The display they are using (very common in the carputing world) is something like the Lilliput629. It's a 7" display, resistive touch. We're using a 9.7" display capacitive touch. Simply put, the iPad will not fit as shown.

Great mention about the radio though. I had no problem ditching mine, as all of my stations stream over the web. If you wanted to keep it, it's very easy using the clock mounting location.

As much as I find the SoundMan guys pretty annoying, they are doing great work. They figured out how to get optical audio out of the iPad, so now everyone that loved the idea but hated the fact they only got stereo out, problem solved.

I'm at work so I can't go get it, but if someone bounces over to youtube and searches, they should find it.

Hey guys, a bunch of you have mentioned (either in this thread or others) that, "hey, what about the hazard button?" Here ya go:

Dash piece, comes out w/ 3 screws and 3 snaps. I've mounted in my RSW250 (volume control knob) with superglue. Also check out how I opened up one of the holes for the Hazard Button.

Buttons installed. Sexy.

Sorry for the brightness, but you can see how I extended the cables. 8 cables, 18 AWG, about 3' in length.

Voice control is up and working

That handles all of my audio needs while driving if I want to play specific artists/playlists/genres... Activator controls allow me to swipe to do actions rather than find a button.

Vlingo allows me to do the rest... search the maps ("find a steakhouse near Worcester, MA"), send e-mails (accesses your Contacts database, and then is just a secretary with good speech-to-text).

Then Rev gives me all of my digital gauges... I like this.

Can you expound a bit on the voice control and Activator? I'm not sure I understand all of the capabilities they offer.

Sure! I actually just filmed a segment with the mp3car guys yesterday on everything iPad in car, from install to using it safely to tethering and jailbreaking.

Once you jailbreak, you can have Activator installed as an extension (it's not a program, you access it through your Preferences screen). You can then assign gestures (pinch, zoom, swipe directions, double-taps, press-and-holds, etc) to events. For carputing, having gestures control the music is fantastic. With a directional swipe, I can play/pause my music, advance to next song/go back to previous song. That way my eyes stay on the road and muscle memory can do the rest. And before you ask, all of the music based gestures (other than previous song) work with Pandora.

As far as the voice control, I utilize two things:
1) Voice Control. Have a 3GS? Same thing. It was disabled on the iPad (not sure why), but it's still in the software. You just have to turn it back on. Plenty of YouTube videos out there to walk you through this. Now I can tell my iPad to play music by specific artists, "play more like this," shuffle on/off... you get the idea.
2) Vlingo. Vlingo is a fantastic app that's really taking Voice-to-Text to a new level. I'm still working on my cadence, but you can talk at a reasonable pace and do several functions:
-"Find a movie theater near Boston, Massachusetts" will kick you into Google Maps and do a search for a movie theater near Boston and drop pins.
-"Twitter update Check out Vlingo" does exactly what you think it does. Similarly, you can control Facebook status updates.
-"Google iPad as a car computer" loads up your web browser and Google's whatever topic you tell it.
-"Email jr4284 Subject Voice Control Message Wow you can really use Vlingo to do a lot" will actually search your contacts, pull the e-mail address, and send an e-mail to them w/ the appropriate subject and message.

OK, very helpful! I enabled voice control and installed Vlingo. Will have to play around with Activator a bit as its configuration screens make my head spin.

So what are your marketing plans? Will your distributor announce these in the classifieds? Are you planning a group buy?

Really looking forward to having an iPad as my head unit!

Oh, I searched around for full DIN equalizers and only found one, a Pioneer DEQ-7600 ($300 list). The AudioControl half-DIN stuff is about the same price. I was thinking it would be cool to put an EQ in the full DIN gauge pod that I currently am running an unused CB radio in. Didn't expect them to be so pricey.

Not sure if this question has been addressed or asked, I didn't see it.

What about the 05-07 Impreza's with manual HVAC controls? Will the layout/measurements be the same?

I'm confused... manual HVAC controls? Do you have a picture of it? (I'm at work so host on imageshack if you can)

Any changes that would be made to the HVAC cutouts would have to be done by the consumer on the back end of things. I don't think it would be that hard, but I'm not a bondo-fabrication kinda guy, either.

Post #111 is a picture of the manual HVAC controls (the turn dial knob thingies). Not auto-climate like the STi's. I have a TR, so I also do not have a cup holder.

So, wasn't sure if this threw off any measurements for the dock.

Honestly I can't speak to that, one way or another, as I've never played with those climate controls before. There would (obviously) have to be some work done to make it fit the HVAC, but the rest should click right into place.

(Side note: STi's are sans cupholder too)

I'll see if anyone around here has that model and maybe I can do a test fit to give you a yes/no answer. My gut is that "yes, it fits, but you have to do something to make the HVAC not look like ass."

Oh I know too much $$$ to swap in the auto climate control though. Was hoping this dock would hide the ugliness, lol.

Honestly what I'd do is pretty simple:
Step 1: Hope and pray the 4 HVAC mounting screws line up (I have a suspicion they will)
Step 2: Take a sheet of fiberglass and go over the holes.
Step 3: Sand to make it smooth.
Step 4: Dremel out a new hole that fits yours perfectly.
Step 5: Paint/Plasti-dip/Nefiwrap to your heart's content
Step 6: ????
Step 7: Profit.
