I accidentally started a comment war over there... I forgot that you can't imply that there's a limit to FWD's capabilities without making certain people very upset

It seems like MS3 wants to stay competitive with the WRX, even with the awkward styling aspect. The MS3 has certain angles that look good, heck even the straight head-on smile look (like it or hate it). But the side profile is aweful with the huge schnoz.

Yes, the WRX is better in every way in my opinion.

FWD for the lose, and the MS3 is ugly IMO.

My Buddy has a 2008 MS3, It's a nice car for the money, would probably take it over the GTI, but wouldn't trade my 2010 WRX for it. Also I think the WRX isn't as off putting as the MS3 in the style department. The WRX may be trending "mainstream" but a mainstream looking car with good to great performance is a winner in my book.

For me the seats of the MS3 are not nearly as nice as the WRX seats, everything else seems to be comparable (read only OK)

He rightfully states that it's on par with a Cooper S and GTI. The lack of AWD and all it's non-torque steering glory is just apples to oranges when compared to a Lancer Ralliart or WRX. The car doesn't even develop full power till you're in 4th gear, what does that tell you about the virtues of a cheap FWD hot hatch?

The Focus RS on the other hand...

The 2008 MS3 developes full power all the time in 3rd gear and near full power in 1st and 2nd depending on how far the wheels are turned. IF you keep the wheels straight, the MS3 darn near gives you all its got in ALL gears. I know they reprogrammed the 2010, so that may have changed... but I know it is still very dependent on how far the wheels are turned.

It only took a test drive when I was considering trading in my 07 WRX on one for me to come to the same conclusion. I like putting all power down at all times when I CHOOSE-let me decide how much power should go down. The interior was HORRIBLE looking, although the dash is kind of cool (the seats look absolutely as every bit as ridiculous as the front end). I would DEFFINENTLY consider the 2010 WRX over this considering my less-power 07 WRX was still more fun to drive than the new MS3for me. Now the older model MS3 was a completely different car IMO

I'd still choose an 07 WRX over the MS3. That limited power until 3rd gear deal is ridiculous.

Obviously its there for a reason, but it would frustrate the hell out of me.

I like the MS3. I think it looks great, but without AWD its crossed off my list and many potential buyers' list.

Ya it handles better stock for stock than a WRX, but once you start modding you would know which one you should have or have not purchased.

I own an Integra GSR fully stock and I get a lot of traction loss and torque steer out of a pathetic 115lbs/tq. I can't imagine how BAD its gotta be with those big numbers.

Its not that bad actually. Many of you are making quantitative assessments on how bad the MS3 torque steers without having driven it. Yes you can feel it, but you have to really be hammering to notice it at all.

As for having your power limited until 3rd gear, at times that does bug me, no lie, but the VAST majority of the time its a non issue. I think most of you think you drive like you are in an autocross on the way to work...

I do not miss the handing of my STI at all with the MS3, its every bit as responsive. But what I do miss is the TRACTION....It is fairly easy to overpower the tires, but ONLY if you are really trying to accelerate HARD from a light. Really, in 95% of your daily driving you never even know its FWD.

Yeah but I don't mean the lack of power would piss me off on the way to work. When I'm out and feel like doing some spirited driving; that's when I don't want to have limited power; especially in first and second gear.

Yeah, but it's all about that 5% of your daily driving, that you don't daily drive it.

^^^ I agree! the Mazda 3 is hideous! the WRX is a nice looking car, nothing crazy like the MS3.
In all previous models the MS3 WAS better. 2009-2010 WRXs are WAY better than the wrong wheel drive mazda.
Subaru did a great job.

Yup, its difficult to get full traction with a FWD on dry pavement with only a 1.8 or 2.0L n/a motor. (hell, my 1.6L, 170hp civic had issues.) I don't how wide of a tire you can stuff under the front of the MS3, but wider doesn't help when it comes to turning.
So it inevitably comes down to either go straight and have traction, or turn and have no power/traction.
Pick 1...
Not my idea of fun.

Also, only 260hp/280tq out of 2.3L with direct injection and 15lbs of boost? Way to go Mazda.. :P Keep up with the club.

Have to call bull-ish on you there... it's relatively easy to spin all four in a WRX/STI, and my 2000 Civic Si used to spin like crazy with crap for torque. Don't even get me started about rainy conditions pulling out from a stop sign. I'm not saying AWD is the end-all be-all but don't try to blow smoke brother man. It makes an enormous difference.
