Default Report: Sporty RS Based On 2012 Ford Focus May Get Hybrid AWD System

Quote:
Itís a well known fact that the U.S. misses out on most of Fordís hot products, but with a push for new global models taking shape in Blue Oval offices around the world hopefully we will start to see more of these coveted models make their way Stateside.

Last year reports emerged claiming Ford was considering bringing its high-performance Focus RS--a 305 horsepower variant of the European Focus hatchback--to the U.S. but those claims were quickly dismissed by the carís engineering chief Jost Capito.

Now, with the global 2012 Ford Focus finally being revealed, interest in the possibility of an RS version being sold in local showrooms has reignited.

According to a new report, Ford is working on a new RS but instead of using the current carís 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo and advanced RevoKnuckle front-wheel drive system and Quaife differential, the next-generation of the high-performance Focus RS will feature a revolutionary hybrid system offering the option of all-wheel drive.

The hybrid system will team a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine with an electric motor in effort to maintain power while cutting emissions and fuel economy. Peak output should remain around the 300 horsepower mark, with drive being sent to the front wheels via the EcoBoost engine and to the rear wheels via the electric motor.

As strange as it may seem that Ford would make such a radical departure for its Focus RS, itís a move Mitsubishi is planning to do for the next-generation of its Lancer Evolution series, the Evo XI.

Donít get too excited because the new Focus RS isnít expected to arrive for at least another three years and anything could change between now and then. In the interim, however, Ford is expected to launch a Focus ST model complete with a 240 horsepower EcoBoost engine and dual-clutch transmission.

Default Ford working on lightweight Focus RS Clubsport, next Focus RS to get EcoBoost

Quote:
Weíve always felt deprived of FoMoCoís hot hatchback in the United States and now it seems like Ford is just rubbing it in our faces. According to latest rumors out of Europe, to bid farewell to the current Focus RS, Ford is planning a special-edition stripped-out Clubsport RS and a brand new RS based on the 2012 Ford Focus recently unveiled at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

The Ford Focus RS Clubsport will make its debut towards the end of the year. Production will be limited to just 500 units with power coming from an uprated 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo making 350-hp. Ford will also strip the hatch to cut weight with new lightweight racing seats and a bunch of carbon fiber. With a lowered and stiffer suspension, the RS Clubsport should go from 0-60 mph in 5 seconds flat.

An all new RS is in the works and sources say that model will drop the current 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo for a new 2.0L EcoBoost direct-injection that will produce close to 300-hp. 0-60 will come in the mid 5-second range with a top speed limited to 155 mph. The next-generation RS is also rumored to get a stop-start system, brake energy recovery and a dual-clutch Powershift box.
Jealous? Yup Ė so are we.

I would be very interested in an AWD, potent, hybrid sedan with a turbo if a MT was involved. I was thinking that no company would mix a turbo engine and a hybrid given the cost, but this application might also make sense in say a vehicle like the Edge. Better fuel economy than a V6 hybrid (presumably) and the cost would be more on par as pairing the hybrid powertrain with a 6 cylinder engine.

I've logged a number of hours behind the wheel of an RX400h and its AWD is okay. This CUV handles well enough, but of course its not as nice as my Subie. But then would you expect a CUV to be? I guess not. So this type of AWD application could be interesting to say the least. Perhaps I will try and drive the peppier RX450h and see what I think.

Well with Ford and Mitsubishi both planning on trying to make a "sports car hybrid" I hope subaru doesn't get the same idea. What Subaru should do is try to keep or even decrease the weight of the STi. Improve fuel mileage and power by better varible valve timing and direct injection (I don't think we need great mileage since this is a sports car not an econo box). The STi might have this part of the market to its self.
