Question Tech inspection before an HPDE/PDX

Over the past few years, I've done only 3 autocrosses in two different cars, an 03 WRX and an 04 GTO. I always had the tech inspection done before the autocross, at the autocross event tech inspection time, on the day of the event. I plan on my first event being a HPDE at Road Atlanta on July 17th and 18th. It is a long time from now, but my little Hyundai commuter car will be paid off in May. That will give me time to find a car, get a helmet, order some fairly sticky summer tires, and whatever else I'll need to do.

What I'd like to know is this. Am I required to have a tech inspection before the event, or is the tech inspection process just like an autocross tech inspection?

Typically before you go. It depends on the event though. At my local track they do it right before at the facility.

Like Kwan said it depends. I would check with whoever is running the event. Some will have you take your car to an approved shop and force you to bring a filled out and stamped sheet saying your car is good to run. Others will do it just like autox and do a quick check and send you out

Check the rules of the event organizers. Some orgs allow for personal inspection (they give you a list of items to check and it's up to you to perform the check and sign the form.) Some have on-track inspection (for a fee sometimes.) Some make you take it to a shop and have a mech certify it.

Yup, it depends on the club and the event. In NASA-Northeast we do them the day of the event for HPDE, but you can also get them done ahead of time as well. I ran with Nor-cal recently and they require them ahead of time and charge $40 on the day of the event, unless you are from out of town and don't have a place local to get it teched.

Oh. So, do the tech inspections usually have a separate fee at an HPDE or PDX? Do you guys think it is too early to contact the event organizer about details of an event that is taking place in July?

A lot of organizations, including ours, do free tech inspection days early in the season. After March you usually have to do it on your own time and dime.

The downside of waiting until you get to the track is that it gives you very little time to fix any faults that are found during inspection.

Whether it's a loose wheel bearing, bad tie rod or ball joint, worn tires, malfunctioning brake lights, unsecure battery, worn brake pads, oil leaks, or any number of possible problems, then you are very likely going to miss track time.

You may miss the whole day, and it's not likely to get a refund.
