Default At what point do I need a tune?

I have an 04 WRX with a Cobb short ram and Samco Maf hose, other then that its all stock. I have Tomei unequal length headers and a catless up pipe waiting to be put on. I was planning on having them put on with an ERZ catless downpipe, ebay Cobb replica cat back (from Surewinproducts), Gimmick turbo inlet, Venair I/C hoses, Grimmspeed EBCS and a Stri-x boost guage. Heres some questions:

1) I would like to have the header and up pipe put on asap because I see them everyday and dont want to wait anymore, but would they even make a difference since I'm on a stock tune and exhaust?

2) If I was to wait and have everything put on at once, about how long could I go without a tune? (I know sooner is always better, but how long would you go)

3) Is the Grimmspeed EBCS set at the stock PSI? Would a tune be required immediately for one?

since I'm already posting, what do you think about a lightened crank pulley? I was planning on getting a Perrin but after some reading about them causing bearings to wear out its not currently on the list.

I would pass on both the ERZ exhaust and the Cobb replica simply because of where you live. Winter will wreak havoc on them.

1. Yes, but you still have the biggest restriction on the exhaust present. What header?

2. Whenever you put a downpipe or that BCS on.

3. Yes.

you can install the headers, uppipe, catback, turbo inlet, ic hoses, and boost gauge. You CANNOT install the the ebc without a custom tune, or the downpipe although you could probably get away with it for a short distance drive. dont drive long without a tune either, your car will hate you for it lol

I know the rust will really take a toll on everything, but I dont have money for a real Cobb exhaust right now. I was planning on painting the dp and cbe with a can of Duplicolor caliper paint with ceramic I have, but that may be more prone to chipping so I'll try Rustoleum BBQ paint. I want to get a tune from Innovative Tuning which is about 160 miles away, would my car run fine with the dp on for the trip? How much do you think it would cost to get the EBCS installed there?

It's a quick install - do it in the parking lot.

If you did have them install it, I wouldn't be surprised if Mike threw it in free of charge (don't necessarily expect that, but he's a good guy, so it wouldn't surprise me if he did).

I would wait on a turbo back exhaust until you can afford quality parts. You'll end up having to buy a new exhaust again after one or two winters which will cost more than getting a quality one to begin with. I'm currently saving up for at least a cat back if not a full turbo back, but haven't decided which to go with though. I know that if I start looking I'll want to pull the trigger on buying one and settle for something of lower quality.
As far as tuning, I've heard as a rule of thumb that anytime you run more air into the engine you'll want to redo the fuel map through a tune. So with a new exhaust system it isn't as important to get a new tune, but if you run a CAI or short ram you'll want a re-tune. Running too rich can cause problems in your car, so the sooner you can get a tune, the better.

I'm not too concerned with the cbe rusting because I know I will most likely end up getting a different one. What if I was to use the stock catback, would it have too much back pressure? But I know the ERZ downpipe has a cast iron bellmouth so thats just a time bomb of rust, but is the rest of it known for rusting? What would be the cheapest stainless downpipe? The Invidia looks pretty good and a lot of people seem to use them.

Unless you are pushing the car hard and running it up to full boost and high rpm you aren't going to have too much of an issue installing the exhaust parts before getting tuned. The BCS should not be installed before you are at your tuning appointment. They way the 3-port bcs's work means it would cause some serious over-boost issues when paired with a stock engine tune.

I have the ERZ downpipe...no problems here. The bottom has started to develop some film rust but the top is legitimate.

I warned you about that but you decided to blow me off. And your exhaust is rusting and it's only a few months old.
