Question OT - Victoria Whale Watching

Hey Guys

I’m looking to head out to Vic in the summer this year. I wanted to know if anyone has done any wild life/whale watching tours. I would be interested to know what is the best priced, best bang for my buck! I have done some research online but wanted to know if anyone has done it personally and what your thoughts were!

Thanks

I have taken the ferry back and forth quite a bit and the odd time you will see them off to one side, them or dolphins. Either way its paying someone who has more knowledge and experience of where to see them or what time of year they are most likely to be in that area, but I think its a crap shoot. I dont think they offer refunds if you dont see anything. I would contact the places that offer the tours yourself and find out from them what they suggest to be best for your plans / date of vacation.

I personally have no experience going on any tours or who the best places to book through would be though.

I did the whale watch tour several years ago while I was there. It was fun and we did get up close to the whales however, I have no idea what company we did it through.

Np guys. I thought I would ask anyways! No harm lol. I will take a look online and make some calls and see what would work best. Seems May to Oct is the best time of the year.

The ferry. Saw four pods on five trips.

Ashr - Yes, I joined a tour last summer or two summers ago at some place in Steveston. If the name comes back to me, I'll let you know. It was rather pricey but fun at the same time. I believe it came out to be $110-130 per person. Did not include any lunch or anything just the boat ride out there. They were very knowledgable and friendly, they got in 'close' with the whales so we could have the full experience but honestly, they take the same routes as the ferries. Now, I don't take the ferries much but I hear you pretty much see the same things as what I saw on the tour and the ferry is significantly cheaper.

Would I recommend it? Yes and no. Good experience but should be alot cheaper. Would I do it again? No.

If you have a chance to get up to Telegraph Cove, at the top end of the island - I would. The whales tend to be more concentrated into a smaller area and you see them allllll the time... I went up to visit friends last summer and there were a few just playing in the mouth of the cove!

I've done it twice, I think they are all pretty on par with each other. There a couple companies right in the harbour that are the best and all similar/same in price. Whale watching in Tofino is much better IMO.

For Tofino the must hit restaurant is SOBO. For places to stay I can't remember one place I stayed but it was good, the other was Middle Beach Lodge. Also flying in is an interesting option unless you desire the drive.

+1 for Middle Beach Lodge, love that place. If you feel like camping, Bella Pacifica is a nice place but you'd have to book now to get a decent spot, if there are any left.

It's a nice drive for sure, as long as you happen to not be stuck behind a convoy of RV's. Lots of twisties!

Nice man, I'm planning a trip over to Tophino this summer with some friends. We are planning on driving it, and might spend a night out there. I mainly want to go to try out the road I have heard lots about, and to check out the open water!

Maybe it will be around the same time and we can have a convoy of Subaru's since the friends I'll be going with all have Subaru's!

Question away or send me PM's. I tend to go to Tofino 3-4 times a year, Summer and Winter. You can also ask Wizzelt. I do believe he's the avid surfer who gets out there often as well. He'd be good to hit up for some info on Tofino
