Default Daytona...

I'm a big fan of The 500 (been watchin since 1970), but this is a fiasco. I do like the spirit of the drivers "lets jus put a cone aut-dare, and lets gitter goin'..." the genome of old moonshine runners Can you imagine the wincing by the insurance underwriters every time that is said?

Sure they are going >200 on the straights, but would love to see the faces on the top 20 roundy-round guys after they recce Rally NY or any Irish tarmac rally...

Any guess how many track facilities engineers are gunna get fired tonight?

That's what happens to 30 year old pavement on a 31 degree bank that bakes in the FL sun and gets the torrential rains

Yeah it wasn't too bad, I was suprised they actually stopped the race. I figured they usually like to see carnage, makes for good TV ratings!

While I have not walked the track in 25 years, (used to live down there), my understanding is that the tarmac has [had] a special resinous top coating to give it more tensile strength to reduce environmental/temp and live load degradation. But I read about that that perhaps a decade ago...

Sun/heat gain on tarmac in the sunshine is huge, hell my 4x4 Chevy Luv truck could spin-up big chunks of noon time tarmac. Gunnite FTW!

Man, these Nascar tracks are a joke. I live by/instruct at Pocono and the place is a wreck. The pavement is disgusting, the pits are a mess, and the place as a whole is a joke. It seriously looks as if the areas used by the racers (besides the new garage) hasnt been touched since 1970.

I guess Nascar is trying to get the most for the least investment....

Knowing PA (I used to live in Scranton), any substantial profits are going to pay bribes to local town/state officials.

Since NASCAR doesn't own Pocono you can blame that on them, Pocono is one of the few privately owned tracks left on the schedule.

Yes, the track is old and needs to be repaved, but the issues are more with the 50 year old design of the track and lack of internal drainage from the burms that were made to create the banking more than anything else. This has happened before at other NASCAR tracks (and quite a bit more often on road courses).

Having been to several NASCAR tracks, I will say that Pocono has among the worst facilities (though not the worst) of the NASCAR Cup tracks that I have been to. The facilities and garages at NHMS, Daytona, and Sears Point are all far superior to those at Pocono.

^Yeah, it was funny because one of the drivers at the end, spoke about how he doesnt want the track to be repaved, because thats the way the drivers like it.. sort of strange.

That is because the older the pavement the more grip it has, as more of the tar wares from the top exposing more of the aggregate material from below, which is what the tires bond with for grip.

I say they just need to patch that spot (maybe the whole lane for a couple hundred feet) and look for any other potential troublemakers and patch those as well.

Not really. The more it's used the less grip the track has. Daytona is one of the most slippery tracks in NASCAR because it's been so long since it's been repaved. Generally the fastest a track is, is just after paving. Take VIR for example. In classes where the cars have been consistent, times had been getting slower bit by bit until they did the grind and seal last winter.

Thats what i found as well.. on all the tracks i've been on when there is repaving going on.. we're faster.
