Default Owned by a Mini Cooper (non S model)

Heading off to work this morning, I got behind a bare bones mini cooper who was in the left hand lane, and wasn't going to move, so I put my blinker on to go around, and the little bastard sped up. Fine by me I said, but then he decided to get in the slow lane and slow down, so again, blinker to the left, and go around, nope, he sped up. This time I said WTF, it's 4am what did I do to this guy!?

I dropped gears from 5th to 4th, floored it, was up around 90 and got ahead of the mini, but no dice, the thing kept coming and went right on by me. Somewhat dissapointed, I don't race for one thing, but I would have thought this tub was a bit faster than the 118hp mini, hell my old Hyundai Accent might have been faster than this Impreza I have now. The "i" in 2.5i should stand for impotent.

Sorry just not feeling my car now after I've owned it for a bit now, it's had more issues than I've ever had in a car, from broken door locks, squeeling blower motor, defective horn, lock/unlock module going bad, and numerous dents given to the extremely thin doors on this rig, I'm thinking about even getting rid of it, but what to get???? I love hatchbacks, love the awd aside from all the flaws, in the snow, it's awesome, just wish I could use my e-brake goin around corners.

Nuff rambling, that's my story/rant.

The mini has the lightweight factor, so I guess it kept up with your impreza with little to no problem. If you dyno a NA impreza, it'll come to about 130 whp more or less, so it wasn't much of a competition. Still, embarassing though

Yes embarassing it was. Then again the dynamat I've stuffed into the entire car doesn't help matters. I had to laugh at myself though. Fond memories of my little Hyundai Accent and the 150 or so whp it had and it looked stock, I could mostly scoot on by.

Damn minis

Are you SURE it was a Cooper and not an "S"?

I guess the exhaust would be the clear indicator.

That said, it's not much of a weight factor, only about 300 lbs or so.

But they are geared on the higher end for highway speed, and they don't lose as much hp to an AWD driveline.

We loved our Cooper S we had for 7 years, but like our new Impreza more in a lot of ways.

It could be the Mini's power-to-weight ratio, or it could have been an owner-modified "sleeper".

Yeah, I looked closely, exhaust off to the side, not in the middle, no red S either. Given the amount of dents on my drivers side, I wouldn't want to smash into him with my "good side", lol, besides I just got finished putting new mirrors on after some git broke the old ones off. Bad luck I guess.

"S" model would've owned him pretty well. the base model is just about comparable

Kinda apples and oranges really.

I don't THINK it's not power-to-weight ratio for the base model - like I said it's only 300 lbs lighter but it's RATED at 52 hp less. That's not small even if there is less parasitic driveline loss.

I do think it might be gear ratio related, but I haven't bothered to compare the specs.

Yeah our S was fine on the top end - supercharger plus 6-speed, you could drop it two gears at 80 mph and just launch yourself north of the ton.

I can't imagine the base model was close.

It would seem that the parasitic drag from the AWD system would be your biggest detriment. Maybe he just de-badged his "S"

Nah, he said the exhaust was to the side instead of at the middle - that's the dead giveaway.

And obviously he got a good look at the BACK END

I'd have to go with the "there are too many variables to really k ow for sure" answer. Could be gear related in that as you were running out of peak power band, he was still hard in the power band of the Cooper. That with the weigt and 2wd advantage... No 300 lbs isn't a lot but it is definately an advantage.

On a similar note, I had a Mazda 3 blow my doors off in front of me on an on ramp a while back when I still had the idea that my bone stock 08 wrx was the fastest thing ever built. Lol I needed the reality check!

But keep in mind it's hard to really announce a winner with a rolling start like that. Way too many variables.

Better have been a Mazdaspeed 3, not just a regular Mazda 3!

Probably.... I just remeber seeing the mazda badge and putting my tail between my legs. Lol whatever it was, it looked very plain and stock.
