Default New Volkswagen Polo GTI: Pocket Rocket with 180HP 1.4-liter TSI

Quote:
The Polo we've all been waiting for ever since Volkswagen lifted the veils off the latest generation model is a reality as the German firm has published the first official photos of the Golf GTI's smaller brother prior to its world premiere at the Geneva auto gathering next month.

The new 2010 Polo GTI packs the same 1.4-liter TSI gasoline engine with turbo- and supercharging as the Seat Ibiza Cupra with an estimated output of 180 horsepower and a hefty 250Nm or 184 lb-ft of torque, available from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm.

VW's new pocket-rocket transfers all those ponies to the front wheels through a seven-speed double clutch DSG transmission. No performance figures were announced, but it is expected that the hot Polo should hit the 100km/h (62mph) mark in under 7,0 seconds and top out at around 225 km/h or 140 mph.

Along with the new engine, the Polo GTI also gets upgraded suspension components and VW's version of the Ibiza Cupra's XDS self locking electronic differential.

In a similar underrated fashion to the Golf GTI, the hottest Polo sports five-spoke polished 17-inch alloy wheels in low profile tires, blacked out headlamps with LED daytime running lights, twin tail pipes and the typical GTI honeycomb grille with a red frame.

Inside we find that a similar flat-bottom steering wheel with red stitching and the tartan cloth sport seats plus a slightly revised instrument panel with red dials.

The new Polo GTI is expected to go on sale in Europe in both three- and five-door body styles shortly after its debut in Geneva.

If they bring this to the US I'll put it on my ever growing list of exciting vehicles to try/buy around 2012.

They can bring 180 and 184 from a 1.4T in the Polo but won't give us more than 200 and 207 from the Golf-based GTI's 2.0T......Arggghhhh........

Way better than the A1. I think they got it backwards. Even the interior looks like a step up over the Audi version. Just get rid of the plaid seats for leather.

the twin-charged'ness is hot.
The size is hot.
The 7-speed DSG....I dunno. I'd have to take on on an aggressive test drive.

the plaid seats i am digging.

Tim-H, ur just too old

It'll look good with my USA snowboarding team plaid jacket.

9 inches shorter and 4 inches narrower than the Golf. Not sure about the weight, but probably in the 2800-2860 lb range (with the DSG and a 165 lb driver).

I thought that it was at 211 like the A4 and doesnt the Golf R have like 280 or something from the same engine. i think i also just saw that mtm has a chip or kit or something for the GTI that is really cheap that ups the power to 300 or more.

I hate those headlights...I can't wait for that design cue to disappear. Otherwise, it looks like a great car. They need to bring it.

Looks nice though admittedly I'd be a bit worried something could go wrong with VW's track record and it having both a turbo and a super charger

That's way too nice to make available in the US.

The lightest Polo weights just around 1000kg. (1045kg I think), so this one should be around 1150kg.

Well the Polo is coming to the US, but it will be slightly bigger and we also get a sedan version. I have a strong feeling the Polo will show its face right around the same time when the 500 and Fiesta show theirs. (This summer)

It should be a fun time for those who like small cars.

I don't think we will get the GTI Polo in the states, VWoA will say something like it will hurt the GTI Golf market, the size of the Golf is really the smallest size car I really want to own anyway...

I do dig it though.

I would rather see the Polo come with that 1.4L TDI that gets 60MPG...

Yeah, I wish I didn't spend all my money, I'd really love a 500 Abarth as a daily driver.

The outside looks great but then they showed the interior and it looks as cheap as you can get... like... 90s KIA cheap.

If VW is concerned that the Sirrocco would cannibalize GTI sales here in the states, this GTI Polo will definitely never see our shores.
