Default Going back to Cali. What chance do I have of driving my car on the street?

Whats up BayArea!

I'm relocating my family back to Cali this spring from Hawaii. I've enjoyed it here but the time to move on (and move back to CA) has come. I've got a modified widebody STi and I'm wondering... what chance do I have of being able to register and drive my car on the street? What tuners is everyone using up in the bay. I'll likely be located in the North Bay but could drive wherever for tuning...

Here's the thread on my car:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1590696

I would (at minimum) be changing out my exhaust to one with a cat. However, I've got a FMIC and a short ram intake. I'm fairly sure that these are not CA legal. However, I see cars on the boards that are running around California with these same mods.

How does the registration process work when transferring into CA from another state? Will the car be inspected straightaway?

Any opinions are welcome? I feel like I should just strip the interior and cage the car already, lol.... But then I'd have to get a trailer and tow the car to the track. I'm not sure my 98 Forester L would do that very well

Any opinions, tips, etc? Looking forward to this move but I'm not so sure how the modded car thing is gonna work.....

TIA - Dave

Your best bet would probably be to talk to GST Motorsports, EQ Tuning or Speed Element Tuning. They would know the specifics, I live in the area but totally rely on my out of state plates for getting around smog laws LOL. Works wonders! Im not sure if hawaii has E85 but there is plenty around here if you have ever thought about getting retuned.... let me know if you have anymore Questions, I will try to be as helpful as I can....

Thanks for the reply. Hawaii has E10 gas and thats what I'm currently tuned on. I'll definately need a retune when I arrive! I'm pretty sure my hawaii plates would stick out like a sore thumb. Looking more and more like my car will be a track car in the PRK.

it all depends where you try to get registered and smogged. if you go to a more relaxed county vs some stick up in the ass county, you can get away with murder

i registered my car in sacramento county with no problems. i have bigger turbo, fmic, intake, cat back, etc. getting around smog will be your biggest problem. swap on a stock turbo back, and try to find someone who will overlook visuals, otherwise you are gunna have a lot of work to do.

Thanks!!

I have my stock tbe so I'm good there. Smog.. well, that will be an issue I would imagine. I'm thinking of going with E85 as a fuel. That should help!

I would give a call to EQ tuning, they can help you out with all your questions!! I've had nothing but great service from the entire staff there...

its not as hard to take care of the smog issue as it will be to not get eyed / harassed by cops and in particular hp here.. the most obvious thing ur gonna have to worry bout is tint, and exhaust... if you have a silencer i would throw it in for drives around town or highway.. and depending on what tracks you go to db's also plays a factor in if they let ya run.. for ex my track is laguna seca (live less then 10 mins away) ur db level to get on the track cant be any higher than 95db.. funny enough that is the same db's that are legal in CA.. anything above and say hello to the state ref.. but yea for your needs in terms of tunes and questions i would either go to gst in hawyard or check out lic in novato.. either of the two have good reps and are active in the forums.. hope that helps some..

I did register my wifes bone stock Mazda 3 and the inspector at DMV went over that thing with a fine toothed comb.

No way I'm going to ever pass that visual inspection unless I completely redo my engine bay.

Booooooooooo....

I suppose I'll just drive it until my Hawaii registration expires and then turn this into a track toy.
