Question How long should I wait?

I just got my WRX and I have heard that removing the silencer from the intake will allow you to hear the turbo and BOV beter. My question is would it be too soon to remover the silencer since I only have close to 300 miles on the car? Or should I just wait till the breakin period is over? Thanks in advance for the replys!!!

I did mine right away. It won't have any effect on break-in.

Yeah dude hack away at the silencer. I removed mine the first week I had it. Plus, you don't have to baby your car so much that you don't have fun during the break in period. If you want to take 1st and 2nd to redline, go ahead. Just don't go blazing down the expressway with your foot to the floor in third. For real though 1st and 2nd don't have that much load. You won't hurt anything. Just don't do it too much. But doing it a couple times during break in is OK.

Well I took out the silencer!! Man that has to be the easiest thing I have done to a car!!! Thanks for the replys guys. It is sooo hard not to let it go past 6000 rpms in any gear. I am being really careful because I warped the cylinders in my Si when I got it and it began to burn oil. I would love to open her open to see what she has but I am to afraid of messing her up in the long run for a few seconds of fun.

I have a suggestion for you. Check your owner's manual about your break in period. That will explain to you the proper way to break in your engine. Just FYI...

Yeah I read through that and I have been taking it pretty easy on the engine. I drove the car tonite after taking out the silencer and after driving it for a little while I could really start hearing the turbo alot beter. Everyday that I drive it and sit inside the car I begin to love it even more. I couldnt have purchased a beter car!!!!

Thumbs up

I must admit that I was amazed at the difference that taking out that silencer made. You can definitely hear the turbo and the BOV after that. I don't really know if it has any effect on performance, although by looking at the stock airbox and all the plumbing, I don't see how removing it can't contribute to something. Glad to hear that you enjoy your car. I enjoy mine more, and more every day. It works both ways, you show her love, and she will show you plenty right back! Did you get a MT or auto? If you got a MT, don't be scared of all the things that you hear on this forum about the tranny being weak. If you treat the tranny properly, you shouldn't have any problems with it. Don't drop the clutch, and make sure you just let the shifter glide into gear every shift. I'll stop rambling now...

I got a MT of course!! When I took out the silencer I couldnt believe that thing even flowed enough air for the turbo!!! That small hole is what is supposed to flow air to the intake???? Since I took it out so soon it is hard for me to say wether or not I noticed a gain because the car is still blowing my mind!!!

xxsive25, what you say about how you drove your car makes me feel beter about the couple of times I took mine to around 5500. I know I could probably drive it a little bit harder now that I have 500 miles on the odometer, but like I said I had a bad experience with driving my Si hard when I first got it so I am a bit scared to screew up the engine in this car. I plan to let the ecu know how I like to drive after the break-in period, trust me!!!

Yeah don't forget that you have forced induction now. A little different from a NA engine. If you would theoretically figure out the compression ratio for a forced induction engine under boost, you would be stunned at the result. A friend of mine with a turboed Integra GSR, figured that his approximate compression at 7PSI was around 34:1! Keep in mind this is theoretical, not something to base anything off of.

Default Where is it...

Where exactly is the silencer. I haven't heard anything about this, I just might have to try it out.

It's in the passenger-side fender. FWIW please don't "hack away" at anything because you might want to put it back later. I was told by vishnu that it doesn't cause any real performance gains, so it's more of a sound mod. I did this mod and got really tired of the hiss, so I put the silencer back on.
