Default Breaking: Acura considering a small car below the TSX

Quote:
Dealers have doubts about Acura ever reaching Tier 1 luxury status after officials reported a sales plunge and a decision to cancel rear-drive V-8 vehicles. At the make meeting, Acura officials tried to talk dealers into agreeing that the new plan, which is reliant on hybrids, would succeed. Dealers would have to wait at least a year for the hybrids to arrive. While they wait, Acura is giving dealers more incentives and higher marketing funds in order to drive traffic. Jim Smail, president of Smail Auto Group in Greensburg, Pa., expressed his eagerness for Acura to start a sales event in April that will run through July.

Each region will have lease and loan incentives that will be tailored for them. Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura division, revealed that in a move rarely made by the carmaker, the sales event will be promoted as such in advertising, instead of as product ads with a sales tag at the end. Conrad revealed however that the incentive plan has yet to be determined.

Along with retail-driven spots, Acura will continue to support a brand advertising campaign, which was launched last year. There will be 11 commercials coming: four will be for the entire brand while seven will concentrate on product attributes. These commercials will feature a high-tech, r&d setting to draw attention to its innovations.

Smail said that Acura is also helping regional dealer advertising associations with additional funds. In October, 19 associations had been formed by Acura dealers. Since then, that number has risen to 24. After the make meeting, Smail said that all dealers would benefit from these commercials because one single dealer on its own won’t be able to afford a broadcast TV ad for a lease or APR deal.

Another strategy that dealers were also pleased about is Acura’s recent rollout of “below the line” dealer incentives. These incentives can raise up to $400 per car for dealers if Acura’s guidelines for training, Internet marketing, customer service and certified pre-owned programs are met.

Conrad confirmed that Acura is considering a small car below the TSX sedan. The vehicle not only would compete against the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and Volvo C30.

Default Tomohiko Kawanabe named the new head of Honda’s r&d subsidiary

Quote:
Tomohiko Kawanabe has been appointed as the new head of Honda Motor Co.’s r&d subsidiary, the position vacated by President and CEO Takanobu Ito. Starting April 1, Kawanabe will function as president and director of Honda R&D Co. Kawanabe has been with Honda for the past 33 years. Last June, Ito took over as president of Honda Motor. Since then, he has concurrently held the posts of president of Honda Motor Co. and president of Honda R&D. Ito has headed Honda R&D since 2003.

He now leaves that job to focus on the parent company. This development makes it likely that 57-year-old Kawanabe is in line for the executive position.

Historically, Honda presidents honed their skills at the development subsidiary. Notably, previous President Takeo Fukui was head of the operation in 1998.

Meanwhile, Ito simultaneously headed Honda Motor and Honda R&D, stating that he aims to consolidate control and facilitate communication and decision making.

However, there were no expectations that Ito would hold both positions long. Within the past year, Ito has saved money by closing down several r&d projects such as Honda’s V-8 engine program. Instead, Ito refocused its development on environmentally friendly drivetrains.

Knowing the asshattery of Honda at the moment, expect a Fit or an Insight with a bottle-opener beak.

Screw Honda, I'm tired of their constantly disappointing vehicles for the past seven years especially when Subaru's delivering better cars for less money as well as Ford and GM achieving parity with the imports.

Acura is going to have a smaller car to compete against the BMW 1 series,Audi A3, Volvo c30...

In looks, they have already failed. Performance? Nope. But in Fuel efficiency, yes.

Don't forget the added luxury price. This will make people wonder why they spent the money on an Acura with little luxury status and should have bought the equivalent Honda model.

I'm basically thinking America is finally going to get the Acura EL. Once again, too little too late (to care, actually).

Don't they have a car smaller than the TSX, the CSX (basically a dressed up Civic), or is this just a Canadian thing?

Canada has had a redressed Civic for an entry Honda for years. I think since the 4-door Integra went away, but I could be wrong.

They did in the late 90's. There's an article about it in this forum in the locked thread.

God dammit I'm so sick of Honda/aAura disappointing. The luxury division is making all the wrong moves because Honda wont break some silly outdated philosophies and refuses to change. First off, its time that they make a 6 speed auto, i am aware they have a 7 in the TL i think, but they need the 6 for a smaller car like the TSX and this new RSX replacement and especially in the accord, the car would be so much better/ fuel efficient with the 6. Next, its time they make a RWD car already and a V8, that will bring appeal back to the company and possibly distract some people from the robot-face styling. enough is enough, we have all been waiting for this RWD/V8 for years and its time they actually go about making a desirable-non boring car. It just doesn't feel right, if you don't want the SH-AWD and you want a 5series competitor you have to opt for a FWD re-badged accord. And as for this hybrid talk and how it may be on the CR-Z platform i think that is a total mistake. Honda did a half assed job on the CR-Z and should be embarrassed to call that the successor to the CRX. They should have given us the car with the K20a or some other high strung four not a hybrid. If Honda doesn't get its act together and starts making something that is profitable and appealing for the Acura brand you could say goodbye to it within 10 years.

The TL and RL have 5-speed automatics, while the ZDX and MDX have a 6-speed automatic that Honda doesn't want to extend to any other car

Instead of designing a six-speed for the 2008 Accord, they decided to implement VCM, which made the car slower than the old one 0-60 and made it impossible to floor the car at 20 mph or below

The 2007 Camry V6 was much faster, and only got 1 mpg less without VCM because Toyota wisely developed a six-speed automatic. With all the unknowns about Toyota at the moment, I'd still buy a Camry over an Accord.

Honda still insists on building their own automatic transmissions even though they're major pieces of crapola.

If your not sure about the Camry, I would go with the Malibu. It is actually a very good car, good steering feel, looks better thanboth the carmy and accord, and has a good ride and handling trade off.

Umm, no - I had one for 3 days as a rental in Calgary. Steering was numb, acceleration was sub par, and I was glad to be back in my 03 Outback, as it was able to warm my feet unlike the Malibu which seemed to have no heat to the floor.

Huh, maybe you got a crappy rental. I drove my sister's malibu to calgary, while the acceleration is not the best it is still good for a four banger in a mid size car, (also coming from a 09 WRX). As for steering feel it was better than the steering feel in my 09 WRX.

Sadly I doubt we'll ever get another Integra or even RSX.
Acura wants to be a full on luxury brand.

God I miss small Hondas with double wishbones.

Yup, I still kinda miss the old GS-R, this talk along with the topic about the Type-r has me on the look out for a ITR for a track car.
