Default Input on Roadsters for future (additional!!) car: Miata vs S2K vs Sky Redline

Within the next year (maybe slightly sooner or longer) I will have the STI (YES, I'm finally/actually keeping a car for 2 years or longer ) paid off and be looking to pick up a vert with a top spending limit of probably $20K. The car will most likely not see the track and will be for fun mostly, but I still want a car that is fun to drive and somewhat performance oriented. Right now, my top picks are:

Newer Miata w/ Hardtop - never driven one, but they get good mpg, like the hardtop even with the weight penalty, and think it would be an enjoyable driving experience. This may be the most chickiest of the cars.

'04+ S2000: great looking, great seats, not high on power (unless in the high rpm range), would look great with a hardtop if I could get one, nice shifter, good handling (as well as the Miata). This is probably the most JDM'est of the cars and scores cool points.

Saturn Sky - I honestly like the styling (flame on!!!), the turbo might be nice, and I believe it and the S2K are somewhat on par for straight line performance/speed at least, but would imagine it is the worst handling out of the bunch most likely. This is probably the gayest of the cars selected.

I was previously looking at Elises, 335i coupes, and M Roadsters, but I think even by then they will maybe get close to $25K, but I'm trying to keep this project/idea a cheaper one, with a payment in the low $200's most likely, after I put down a bit. But who knows, if I can swing something like the just mentioned cars, that could be an idea as well.

Poll created and thoughts, guys?

Thanks,
John

S2000 is my vote. Like you said, looks great with a Hardtop. It's got a great suspension platform. It's good on power. Not the best. But it's not lacking all that much. Plus the styling is nice.

thanks, I have been thinking that bang for your buck at like $15K or less, you can't really go wrong with one of those. And its a Honda.

First gen Miata with an LS1?

Under $5,000 I would say Miata, given your budget I would go S2k. The Sky / solstice is rubbish, terrible driver position.

Based on personal experience, the Miata is more fun than the numbers let on, the Sky Redline has a meaty turbo powerband, but doesn't drive as well as the S2000. The Honda is the best balance of handling and power in the cheap roadster market.

The Z4 M coupe I drove I really liked, to the point that when I got home I researched prices on used ones. That was two years ago, they were still in the 40's. No experience with 335's or Elises yet.

Been there, done that - twice. Although the C6 Z51 I had was INCREDIBLE as a highway car and track car, the rest of the time I never wanted to drive it - not to work, not to the bank, etc.. and it just wasn't fun unless you were at the track or pulling hard on the highway. It sat in my garage most of the time

I don't know if they will get down to $20K, but they are nearing $25K already, it may be something to ante up the additional dough and make it worthwhile, especially feeling better since it has the Toyota engine

Mark, I've always heard that on the Miata, but have yet to drive one. I hear ya on the S2K, and you've had yours for quite some time now.

Seriously, the Z4 M Coupes and roadsters have broken into the high 20's and low 30's, which is just incredible. I would assume that engine and power has to be incredible. I've driven a few elises and I was grinning ear to ear as its like a go kart, I loved the handling, the sounds, and having a targa top would be sweet. Drove many 335i's, but could just never pull the trigger on one (same with the E46 M3).

1.8L turbo, 6-speed, LSD.

Only 180ish HP but I believe a little more can be cranked out of it very easily.

The thing people forget is that these cars weigh nothing and are perfectly balanced. The owners manual for my 1990 Base shows a dry weight of 2100 lbs

I'll have to look more into those, that's for sure. BTW, can we get the track thread stickied, please?

If you're just going to use it for cruising, I would throw the Boxster S into the picture. The interior will be a much better place to sit than the spartan S2k and Miata. Plus it has excellent cornering abilities...maybe even better than the S2K.

MF-DIF - I've considered that as well, but just don't know if I'd be alright with it not being a 911, lol... I still have yet to drive a Boxster though, and the prices are good. I hear it handles very well. Maintenance costs would probably be an issue down the line, although I know of a good shop to work on it from when I had a 996 911. that being said, its too bad the Cayman S probably wont hit my price range by then either, that I COULD go with, I'm thinking based on everything I've heard about that car.

David - MR2 wouldn't work for me, no offense my friend! that is a nice Miata tho.
