Default British government will pay 25% if you buy electric car

Quote:
Incentives of up to 5,000 pounds ($7,668) will be given by the British government to those who will purchase an “ultra-low carbon” car starting next year, the Department of Transport said last Thursday. Both private and fleet buyers can take advantage of the Plug-in Car Grant of 25% toward the purchase price, capped at 5,000 pounds. It will be available across Britain starting January 2011. It’s expected that by that time, there will be several qualifying vehicles that are on sale. The British government has set aside 230 million pounds to fund this undertaking.

Eligible cars include only battery electric, plug-in hybrids with CO2 emissions of less than 75 grams per kilometer and hydrogen fuel cell cars. The electric vehicles are required to have a range of at least 70 miles (113km) while hybrids must have the ability to run for at least 10 miles without using fuel.

All vehicles must be able to go faster than 60 miles per hour. Many carmakers are delighted by the news. Norwegian electric car maker Think, in particular, said that it welcomes the UK’s efforts to move more quickly to catch up to the leading European countries in the rollout of electric vehicles.

In an e-mail, Think CEO Richard Canny responded to inquiries, stating that these new incentives will “significantly increase [its] focus on the UK market.” France already offers a 5,000 euro ($6,775) subsidy to buyers of electric cars.

Subsidy has its root in Socialism. True Capitalism there is no play by the goverment. So it stinks to high heaven, but your from Illinois where they would sell there soul for a piece of bread handed out by the Goverment.

Sounds like they're really just knocking a bit of the tax off and calling it a subsidy. They just ended the scrappage program over there so it's time for them to find new ways to spend money.

I'll listen once you have the agriculture and ethanol subsidies dropped, the emissions and safety regs for cars and trucks equal (as it is now it's a subsidy of sorts for trucks), and the externalities of gasoline usage reflected in its price. Then it'd be closer to your utopian free market. For now it is what it is, and an explicit EV subsidy isn't the tipping point between socialism and Somalia.
