Default bypass rear cat o2 sensor, is mechanic worng?

I have a 01 impreza rs. I installed 1 spark plug anti fouler (didnt seem to have enough clearance for two) reset the brain by leaving power disconnected. Started up, no code for about a minute then it poped back on!!!

Im thinking that I may need a new o2 sensor because its old.

does anyone know out there is when it throws a rear o2 cel does it actually change anything in the operation of engine performance?? because i swear when it would would come on along time ago I would notice a difference (very slight) and a mechanic told me that if the rear goes out, the car will run richer? and that you can actually tank your cat all because of not replacing the sensor??

is this true?

The rear is only used for emissions and does not effect fuel trim so you will be fine engine wise. I think on newer cars with higher bit ECUs it may be used for more IIRC.

There was a big thread on this recently if you are up for some reading hit up the search function

The code will prob tell you if it's a bad sensor or not. If it's not bad you'll prob just get a cat efficiency code. The spark plug anti-fouler worked for my emissions one time (still feel like I kind of got lucky with that one), used a MIL eliminator one time (wire it into the o2 sensor wires), but now I just use a tactrix cable and romraider
