Default What to do to make the car GO

Hi, I have a 1997 Impreza Outback Sport. It's got a 2.2 liter engine and a five-speed standard transmission.

At this point, I don't care about rims and aesthetic additions, but I'm a big sound man and want the car to run better than it does.

If I wanted to increase my horsepower and efficiency of my vehicle, how would I go about that? CAI? I'm not in the market, at this time, for anything expensive like turbo-charging which as my ignorance tells me, its around $2,000.

Also, an aside: I have a good stereo (Subaru) with weather band, FM/AM/, tape, CD player .. . But my speakers and their positions (one in each door) seem to need something else. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Post

Glad to see another fellow 97 OBS owner...

I had an AEM intake on my 2.2L, but found it took away the torque. I am saving up for a cat-back exhaust, hopefully a stromung or Borla. Headers are another option with the 2.2L. I do not know of much else to do to get it faster without a turbo.

One of my first mods two years ago when I purchased my OBS was to replace all 4 speakers and install sound deadening in the doors. I also have a 10" J&L sub in the back with a 150 watt amp. My original speakers were crap and basically fell apart in my hands when I removed them.

Good luck with your OBS and finding some go fast goodies.

Jonathan:

Here's my ignorance again, what's OBS, AEM intake, and what does the cat-back exhaust do? And what will headers do for me?

(I'm so ignorant here!)

How much did it cost you to (a) install sound deadedning, (b) the J&L sub, (c) 150 watt amp?

Thanks!

Default POWER!

"how much more power are you looking for n the engine?"

jhohl: well, at this point finances dictate. It appears that if I wanted the most power, I'd have to turbocharge the engine, correct? I can't do that, b/c I don't have $2,000 to spend on it. I was just searching for all available options so I can see what's available.

Thanks!

OBS stands for Outback Sport

The sound deadening (DynoMat)was $100 installed @ Best Buy

Speakers were Sony Xplode installed for $150 at Best Buy.

J&L Sub and Xplode amp and Xplode CD Head Unit was $550 installed two years ago.

My intake was $215 shipped when I bought it. The exhaust system will run you anywhere from $350 to $550 for the catback.

hope this helps
