Legacy single vs. dual port ej22 heads

after about 2 hours of searching i know that:
the phase II ej22 heads possibly flow "ok" due to possible larger valves but still not up there with ej25 heads
the flow on the single and dual port phase I ej22 heads suck but not as much as ej18 heads
the HCF is only a recommendation for existing 2.2 owners (me!)

so i am going to get a 95 ej22 long block this sunday with lower end noise it has the dual port heads

i can't find any evidence one way or another the seemingly main bonus for the dual ports is the header options...

i have a set of custom "long tube" headers that cost me a whopping $70 for my single ports they can be easily adapted for the dual ports :

the main reasons i am getting the long block:
extra set of cams for delta to work on
intake manifold and valve covers that can be painted without any down time
extra sensors
possible better heads

so what head is better for me? i am going to be doing a home brew porting and polish on one set of heads that will go on the hcf ( phase II ej25 )

thanks
grafton

Since you don't have a set of phase II Ej22 heads, we can just remove them from the discussion. This makes things less confusing.

What you have is one set each of single port and dual port phase I Ej22 heads, right? Of those two heads, I would say that the dual port is the better one to do your build with. The advantages that you list above apply to phase II heads. All other things being equal on phase I heads, the dual port will flow better.

hey, did you make those headers yourself? I went to a muffler shop here in my town and this one guy said, "i don't know who does that anymore" . I don't feel like paying 375 for headers from a guy over on RS25.com they aren't worth that to me, its a no name brandname and its just not worth that much.
I also havn't been able to find the singleport header gaskets from my local parts shops, Im sure I can get them from subaru but Im sure there is a cheaper and equally reliable part somewhere.

i am also in the same boat as far as gaskets. on my 96 legacy outback my engine code is ej22e but the heads and intake manifold are different than my 95 impreza l which has the same engine code but has dual exhaust ports. also i called the subaru dealer and gave them my vin number and they also said that the heads should be dual port and they are not. so either i have a different engine in my car or subaru stamped it wrong(highly unlikely)

so the big question is what heads did the single exhaust port Phase I heads come off of?

My local exhaust shop made them ( less than 100ft away from my apartment ) i have no welding skills otherwise i would've tried. The dealership shouldn't be too outrageous, that's where i got mine.

96 is when they switched to single ports on the ej22e so it sounds right to me.

I have the dual port ej22. Does this mean a set of headers exists out there ? I cant find them anywhere. All i can find is JDM turbo manifolds for 1500 dollars that obviously wouldnt work anyways,
