Default BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid makes world debut

Quote:
BMW has taken the wraps off its latest hybrid model, the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid. The Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid made its world debut alongside the standard-issue 5-Series sedan at the Geneva Motor Show.

Based on the latest iteration of the BMW 5-Series sedan, the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid hints at a more fuel-efficient version of the luxury saloon. Although the overall shape of the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid isnít radically different from its gas/diesel counterpart, the concept features BMWís latest hybrid technology.

Unlike the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid uses an inline-six engine with TwinPower Turbo technology. BMW failed to release a horsepower figure, but expect the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid to match the 300 horsepower found in the 535i.

The Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid features and upgraded 40kW electric motor, backed by a high-voltage electric battery pack mounted in the rear of the car. BMW has yet to reveal if the battery is on the conventional nickel-metal hydride variety or the latest lithium-ion tech. Either way, the battery provides enough juice to allow the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid to operate under pure electric power at city speeds. Overall, the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid improves the 5-Seriesí fuel economy by 10 percent.

No word on a production version of the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid, but expect to see something on the road within the next few months.
