Default 2008 STi: jiggly driver seat (question)

Hi everyone,

My apology if this is covered elsewhere. A cursory search of the forums didnít turn op anything on this topic. I found topics on loose mounting bolts but not on this particular problem. Hopefully, someone will have answer for me (or can at least point me to the thread that answers my question).

The driver seat in my 2008 STi jiggles when I accelerate hard or brake even moderately. This is a recent phenomenon. It was fine until a few weeks ago. The passenger seat is perfectly stiff. I checked the mounting bolts and they are secure. The dealer also checked all the bolts and told me that they are secure. They also checked all the connections (or so they told me) where a seat might jiggle. They concluded that this was by design. They supported their conclusion by telling me that they went out and checked one of their 2010 STis and it too has a jiggly driver seat but the passenger seat was not jiggly.

I told the dealer I didnít believe him that this is a design feature of the car. He said my only recourse is to call Subaru and get an engineer who will issue an official statement that this is something that needs fixing and also how to fix it. Before I attempt that (that sounds like tilting at windmills, if you ask me :-), I figured Iíd ask in the forums to see if anyone else knows about this.

Is this really a design feature of the car? None of my other cars has this jiggly seat ďfeatureĒ (í07 BMW M coupe, í65 Chrysler, old ford wagon). So why would an STi be designed to do this? Why would a driver want that feature?

This car only has 12,000 miles on it and Iím not a heavy person (185 lbs).

Thanks in advance.

Well neither my 08 or 10 sti have had that problem. I dunno. Which way is it "jiggling"? Also, unless you get into the new sti and check for yourself, I wouldn't take their word for it. Depending on your warranty, a replacement may be covered if it ends up that way.

It jiggles fore-aft. I looked at their demo model and it does jiggle a little bit--but I suspect that maybe a lot of large people maybe broke it in :-)

I went to Subaru's web page yesterday and submitted a question on this topic and below is what they told me.

"Dear <redacted name>:

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, Inc. I'm sorry to learn of your concern with a looseness in your driver seat on your 2008 STI. I will need to contact the dealer to review this concern further, but I personally do not remember any WRX or STI that I have driven to have a loose or "jiggly" driver seat. I will be in touch with you soon. Regards,

<redacted name> - Subaru of America, Inc. "

Let's see what comes of their discussion with the dealer.
