Default jdm sti V7 or 8 transmission swap in 03 wrx

ok i just have one question that i cant seem to get a straight answer from anyone so i know that first of all you can re use wrx axles if you have to not that i would because my swap comes with axles, drive shaft, rear LSD, and transmission/ trans mount but if theoretically you can reuse the axles can i use my 03 wrx hubs on my car instead of having to get the brembos and hubs and knuckles too? any help would be apreciated thanks guys.

you can use your front axles. they will fit without any problems...

you can not use your rear axles. unless you get a 3.9:1 R160.

the R180 axles will not fit on the r160 diff. or the r160 hubs. and the r160 axles will not fit on the r180 diff. or the r180 hubs.

if you want to use the r180 diff, you will have to use R180 hubs or get costom axles with r180 inners and r160 outters.

suberdave is correct.

Personally, I'm interested in the "hybrid axles" idea, but the only ones I know of are made by the driveshaft shop, and they're stupid-expensive.

I've been told to contact Four Star Motorsports in Canada for info about hybrid axles. I'm hoping its possible for much cheaper than DSS makes them. If not, I'll just get a 3.90 ring and pinion for the R160.

Dude, punctuation; use it. I seriously had to read that four times before I figured out what you were trying to say.

Anyway...you're correct. Your WRX brakes will not work. You'll need Brembos. IIRC, you can use the 06-07 WRX 2/4 pot calipers if you prefer. Many rally people prefer them as you can run smaller wheels than those that are necessary to clear Brembos. They can probably be had cheaper, too.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I have been searching for an answer for a while:

I have an 02 wrx, and the opportunity to by a V7 STI 6sp. Can I just drop it in place of my existing tranny? Isn't my rear diff an r160 with a 3.9:1 ratio? Will the driveshaft work?

I really appreciate help on finding a definitive answer on this. Thanks!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm half asleep....

Stock 02 WRX rear diff is a 3.54.

It all depends on the ratio of the center diff in the 6mt. If it is a 1:1, you need a 3.90 rear diff, as your front diff is also a 3.90. If it is a 1.1:1, you need a 3.54 rear diff, which, when multiplied by 1.1:1, matches the 3.90 ratio of the front.

That said, I'm not sure what the center diff ratio is on a v7 JDM 6mt. I would guess it's 1:1, and you'd need to find a 3.90 rear end, but I really don't know for sure.

A little searching seems to validate your claim. I'm fairly certain the 6mt is 1:1 (I'll have to double check the part number on the tranny). So I need a 3.90 rear, but I'd like one that would just drop in place of my existing diff (I don't want to have to swap axles or brakes or anything). Does anyone know my options?

Awesome, sounds like you're on the right track.

As for finding a 3.90 (r160)...some 90's Subarus had them. Depending on the model/year, you can find either open diffs or mechanical LSDs. (There is actually a mechanical LSD r160 3.90 in the FS section right now, but it'd have to be installed into your housing, so, not quite "drop-in.") There may be some VLSDs; I don't remember the specifics, though. If this route interests you, search and ye' shall find. I know I've seen the info out there, I just have no idea where.

If you want to run an r180, PM suberdave (who posted earlier in this thread ^^) and see if he still has any CV races for sale. He had custom races made that allow you to make hybrid axles, and thus, retain oem hubs, brakes, etc. with an r180. I bought a set from him, and I'll be installing them soon.

you are correct i have one set of races left, and i also have one set of drop in hybrid axles.

for the races you will need a set of 05+ axles and a set of WRX axles. $150 shipped

or the bolt in hybrid axles for $450 shipped to the 48.

Haha, someone better grab them before they're gone!

Again, thanks for getting these made. I can't wait to put them to use!

Any idea how strong they are? They look beefy as hell...so I'm guessing the WRX shaft would snap before these races would fail. Think so?
