Like past editions of the 5 Series Touring, this one is essentially the same as the sedan, only with the roof extending straight back to enclose a substantially larger cargo area.

All of the fancy new technology that we've already seen in the 5 Series Gran Turismo and sedan is carried over into the Touring. That includes the driver assistance systems like the surround-view cameras and parking assist. Underhood, BMW's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 won't be available at launch, but a selection of gas and diesel four- and six cylinder engines will be offered. The range-topping 535i is powered by the new 300-horsepower 3.0-liter N55 twin-scroll turbo direct-injected inline-six.

Single-turbo versions of the 2.0-liter inline-four and 3.0-liter inline-six diesels are also available with 184 hp and 245 hp respectively. The four-cylinder 520d Touring gets an EU combined fuel economy rating of 45.2 miles per gallon (U.S.) with the 530d also scoring an impressive 36.8 mpg.

Unfortunately, it seems extremely unlikely that we will ever get to see any of these handsome new wagons given Americans' ongoing aversion to this body style. We'll just be forced to make do with the homelier-looking 5 Series Gran Turismo. Click past the jump to check out new video footage of the 5 series Touring.

That actually doesn't look bad... it flows well. It's a lot better than that stupid 5-Series GT model or whatever it was.

It's always been a great looking car (5 series wagon), too bad that we will not be getting them. At least Merc keeps bringing them over.

Merc does ZERO for me. No stick, no want. Plus, this BMW 5 Touring is one of most classically beautiful "normal" cars I've ever seen. It is just ridiculously handsome.

535i Touring, 6MT please. Luckily, I can't afford it, so there is no real reason for me to get angry about it.

^^I have seriously thought about a 535xi touring with 6MT. But used ones are rare and new ones have to be special-ordered from die Vaterland. Plus the driver side-impact crash tests results are poor

agreed; this may be my next car (might be moving to Germany in a few years)

Well, no more 5-series wagon for the U.S

The outgoing generation wagon looked kinda clunky and ungainly. The new one is a looker, so clean sporty lines... I'd buy one in a heartbeat, seriously.

I visited BMW headquarters in Munich in January and they showed us all the pictures of the new 5.

They claimed that they are making the 5 and 7 series look basically the same (7 is just longer) so that parts fit on both. This is for cost savings. So they can make the same parts that will fit in both cars...

Makes sense I guess.

Default Why BMW may longer be The Ultimate Driving Machine

Quote:
Just driven the new BMW 5-series and a very good car it is too, if curiously unexceptional. The outgoing Five was stand-out in so many ways, from idiosyncratic style to its hunkered-down handling.

The new one looks cleaner, goes better, uses less fuel (few cars have a better haste-to-carbon ratio) and has a better-crafted cabin. And yet… The looks are more generic, the driving experience (in bigger-selling smaller-engine guises) less special. It’s a less brave BMW, if – as an all-rounder – a better one.

It’s symptomatic of Munich’s continuing move to court all the moneyed masses, no matter what their level of driving keenness. The recent ‘hatchback’ 5 GT – a BMW sold more on space than sportiness – is the clearest proof of the shift. The Ultimate Driving Machine isn’t quite the superlative that it once was. (Note: If you want to have fun driving the new 5-series saloon, you must order the optional ‘adaptive drive’ and associated electronic handling aids that only come with the bigger engine versions: then you get the agility and élan you’d expect from a BMW sports saloon. You also get superior ride comfort. So equipped, upper-end 5s are inspired cars.)

The Bangle revolution is over

Strange, also, how the Bangle styling revolution has lost its zeal. It ended, abruptly, with King Chris’s exile. Recent BMWs have been conservatively styled, more organic, cleaner; Bangle abridged. They are elegant cars, not challenging cars. A maker that seeks broad approval does not want to ostracise. From Seven to X1, from latest Three to new Five. The Special One and his ‘surface entertainment’ – he used also to call it ‘visual energy’ – seem like a distant memory. The hyperactive style has turned sober. If you want surface entertainment now, go to Mercedes, whose styling was once as cutting edge as an issue of Country Life. New Mercedes design now polarises; it turns heads, and sometimes stomachs.

Jaguar may benefit from BMW’s shift

The other great styling segregator – more proof of this changing car market! – is that one-time exemplar of hidebound fogeyness, Jaguar. Everyone seems to have a view on the new XJ. And, increasingly, most seem to like it. Just as important, it has grabbed the mantle of ‘best driving big luxury sports saloon’. The BMW 7-series, by comparison, is aimed more at the blancmange-bellied banker, keen to have a kip in row two. (Never mind that the XJ actually rides better.)

This is not a position that you would expect from a Jaguar, much less from the XJ, once the pipe-and-slippers saloon of listless old men. But as Munich subtly loses its razor-sharp sports focus, and Mercedes stays (quite properly) preoccupied with comfort and refinement (at least from its saloons), so there is quite suddenly a very compelling reason to buy a Jaguar.

By Drew Johnson

BMW pulled the sheet off its all-new 5-Series wagon early last month, but kept quite on the cargo-haulers United States plans. However, the German automaker has officially made a decision on the subject, with the U.S. market set to be left out in the cold.

As United States buyers tend to shy away from traditional wagon offerings, it was widely believed that BMW would forgo the U.S. market for the next-generation of the 5-Series wagon. Those reports have now been confirmed, with BMW officially deciding not to import the new 5-Series wagon to the U.S.

Filling the place of the 5-Series wagon in the United States will be BMW’s new 5-Series GT. Designed with American tastes in mind, the 5-Series GT offers the versatility of a hatchback while still offering the body lines of a sedan.

However, those U.S. buyers wanting a traditional wagon with a BMW badge will not completely be left behind – BMW will continue to offer a wagon variant of the 3-Series. But don’t expect a huge spike in 3-Series wagon sales going forward as BMW sold fewer than 1,000 examples of the 5-Series wagon in the U.S. last year.
