Default Hyundai shows off 2012 Accent ahead of NY Debut!

Quote:
As part of Hyundai’s sponsorship of Coachella, a music festival in Indio, California, the automaker is hiding (sort of) a brand new, bright and shiny blue 2012 Accent and allowing attendees to sit in and check out the next small car to come from the Korean automaker. Not to be left out, Hyundai decided to Tweet out a side profile shot of the car for the rest of us to enjoy as well.
Official specs won’t likely be released until the expected reveal at the New York show on the 20th, but it is believed the all-new Accent will utilize a 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection inline-four cylinder engine, good for up to 140 horsepower. There are also talks of a smaller, non-GDI engine at just 1.4-liters of displacement, likely not bound for U.S. shores.
In the U.S., the four-pot will likely be paired to either a standard five-speed manual or a six-speed automatictransmission at launch.

1.6L making 140hp seems impressive. Hyundai continues to bring out awesome product models.

And it should be adequately quick if it keeps the weight down. The current Accent is about 2400 lbs.

What if they put the turbo engine that is rumored to go into the veloster into an accent. I really don't think anything in its class could touch it.

Make the accent as good looking as the new elantra and it will be a hit! Put the turbo engine in it and I'll probably buy one.

It seems like someone finally realized that a 1.6 engine with 140hp
makes better MPG than a 1.6 engine with 110hp.
stronger engine=less effort to move itself.

Since with your qualifications torque remains fairly identical, your argument is flawed.

M3 vs Prius is a competition of a small gas motor running at high output, against a large powerful motor running a part output.

Yes, the motor needs to be matched to the cars size. Tuning for purpose has a greater effect than just quoting a displacement.

DI allows for higher compression, yielding greater torque and efficiency. This comes at a cost in complexity.

the added MPG is coming from the efficency part (as most of the MPG testing scale is in low-load situations) while acceptable performance from a small motor comes in the power end.

The 2012 Hyundai Accent broke cover at the New York Auto Show on Tuesday, but Hyundai has previewed the car before, at both the Montreal and Toronto Auto Shows, with little fanfare or media coverage.

The previous Accent was the kind of car that you bought out of necessity rather than desire, but the newest subcompact Hyundai looks like it will find homes among many, thanks to handsome styling and 40 mpg capability without any special order option packages. Motivation comes from a direct-injection 138-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that makes 123 ft-lbs of torque while returning 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission will be offered, and automatic transmission models will feature a driver selectable Eco mode that is said to improve “real-world” fuel economy by as much as 7 percent.

Despite its diminutive exterior, Hyundai claims that interior space is so large that the car is classified as a compact. Items like stability control, ABS, and power steering are standard, while Bluetooth connectivity, an iPod connector and 16″ allow wheels are optional. The Accent will start at around $12,000 for a base model, bringin an end to the days where an Accent could be had brand new for under $10,000.

that means $12,999 base price which also means no A/C, power windows etc. so a Normal Accent would be around $15,000.

The "build your own" feature for the Accent is already up on Hyundai's website, so you can see exactly what is included.

If you want a car with A/C, its basically $15,000... Auto is another $1000 on top of that. You can't get the automatic without the A/C so basically its $16,000 for an automatic accent no matter what you do.

Very sharp car in the flesh. I sat in the red 4-door and was pretty impressed with the airyness and room of the interior. Build quality was pretty impressive too!

The Si perhaps, not the EX, or lower. I know, because I had an '98 EX and '98 LX, which had around 12x and 11x hp respectively. Can't remember what the mpg on the EX was, but the LX turned in a consistent 32mpg hwy, over the 200k miles I put on it (use to drive all over TX for work). Don't remember the official rated mpg, but it wasn't 40mpg.
