Default just put in hids for my 08 wrx...have a slight problem

so after putting in the hid bulbs, everything was working fine, both headlights worked just perfect. After driving around for a bit and returning home i found that one of the headlights stopped working...i pulled out the ballast for that side, passenger side (which btw fell cuz of bad placement...) and noticed it was not even being powered, i pulled out the plug with the black and red wires which i assume is the power outlet and plugged it back in. I did this a couple times and started hearing a zapping noise every time it was about to connect and my lights would try to power up but flickering, i kept on zapping it and it powers up after a couple tries and then continues to work properly. It felt like i was jumping a car or something lol anyone have any idea what is going on? i had to do it again this afternoon to turn it on even though it was working in the morning, dont really know if i want to do it all the time...

any feedback would help! thanks in advance.

sounds to me like the ballast is bad. may have shorted out when it fell.

I am not sure if you are having the same exact problem I had but kind of sounds like it. I had my HID's retrofitted in my 07 WRX for about a year until I went to the new car wash in town and they beat the snot out of my car. Later that night when I turned my headlights on it just started pulsing until I had to manually reach in and start fiddling with wires and wham they worked with no problems that whole night. The next night they did the same thing but this time they never turned back on just a constant pulsing and then absolutely nothing. I took my car to the dealer and within an hour they knew what my problem was and fixed it. They said that it wasn't my ballast like I assumed, but was in fact my headlight relay went bad. Once they replaced it I have not had a problem since. Not sure if my story helps, but you could always stop by your dealership and have them look at your car and hopefully it is a quick fix like mine was.

thanks for the inputs! i was thinking it may had to do with the ballast falling and maybe pulled a plug or something i did check and made sure everything looked good, but anyway i'll check it out for a couple days and see if it continues to give me problems, if it does maybe ill swing by the dealership, gausy how much did the stealership fix it for you for?

please stop using the HID until you get the ballast fixed. you are risking burning down your car.

Your headlights aren't designed for these, you're having problems for a reason.

hmm so that one light was working for a couple days then it started doing it again, but i can still start it up after doing the whole connect and reconnect/letting it zap...

does anyone have any suggestions? the other light is working just fine and never have any problems so im kinda confused, someone did suggest resetting the battery or something to let the ecu realize how much power to give out for lights?

i have ddm 55w slim balast hid kits by the way...

thanks!

Im sure you just have a bad ballast . DO u have your daytime running lights disabled ? if you dont it will cause your HID kit to flicker . The buzzing is the ballast igniting (turning on ) so thats natural . If the ballast is bad just call the vendor you bought the HID kit from and see if they have a lifetime warranty on there kits .

Swap the ballasts from each side, if the problematic side turns on with the new ballast then you know what the issue is, if it doesn't it probably means the bulb is bad.

Why would DRL cause the HIDs to flicker? They turn off as soon as the headlights turn on.

IF the 08's are anything like the 07s, the HIDs will flicker when using the DRL's. To the OP , switch the ballasts and see if the HID is still no turning on .

alot of HIDs do flicker with the DRL system connected, it seems like the more power that the HID kit draws, the worse the problem gets..ie flickering- to one side not even lighting up.. i had the same thing happen to my car.. a couple of us think that it is because the DRL system wiring that goes through the handbrake is not able to carry the power that the kit needs, therefore disabling the DRLs just bypasses the handbrake and all that other shiz... i wonder if that made sense...

I understand what you're saying, but am confused why the DRL would affect the low beams since they run through the high beams. And the DRL shut off the instant the low beams are turned on.

if the ballist is painted black the paint might have worn off and is rubbing against a piece of metal from the car. one of mine did this and it took me awhile to find it. good luck....

That's interesting!!! Never would have even thought to check for that!

I think OP said they were new tho? So prolly no wear so soon.. Plus I swear by DDMs lol

That is a good point lol. With my year it's not the high beams so I could explain myself lol.. For this year idk why it works..

So, so far after disconnecting the DRLs, my lights have been working properly and starting up correctly *knocks on wood* haha but like DWU said i think it was indeed the DRL drawing out the power that the HIDs needed to start up...the DRL was on the side of my troubled headlight and after disabling the DRL there was enough power to go around to power up the lights. Anyway, i think thats the end of my troubling HID problems, thanks a lot guys!

If this was causing problems, then you have bigger issues. The case of the ballast should NOT be powered, and the case grounding to metal on the vehicle should NOT be causing a short circuit.
