If you havent volunteered for a regional rally before, just select the "Ive never registered online" before option then click "I want to log in" and it will take you to an online registration form where you can create a login/password.

It doesnt prompt you for much personal information, just your name and contact info and some questions about t-shirt size and what positions you are interested in helping with. It then keeps your contact info in a rally database so, if you so choose, you can be notified of upcoming rally's.

I forgot to point out, volunteering for the rally also allows you to eat for free at the end of rally banquet on Sunday afternoon! (just be sure to keep your Rally America wrist band)

I actually thought about doing this last year but than I went to the Rally as a spectator. All the "marshalls" and etc were super dicks and nazi about doing anything even remotely close to breaking some silly rule... Don't really wanna be part of that so I'm just gonna continue as a spectator....

Im sorry you were treated that way, but having been involved with every regional rally in the area for a few years now, I can say that is not the norm. Also, Im not sure what may have transpired in your experience, and I will admit that some people take things a little extreme, they are just volunteers not paid/professional rally officials. For the sake of being objective, some rules perceived as silly to some, are in place for good reason and are there to protect both you and the competitors.

There are lots of other positions you can volunteer to help with, Spectator Marshall is just one of many, perhaps you would enjoy being a Road Marshall. You are assigned your own corner out on the rally stage, all that is asked of you is to keep people from driving or walking on to the active stage. You get to be right in the middle of the action as rally cars pass by you at race speed.

To reiterate what was previously stated, I'm sorry that your experience was negative. But we are all volunteers and this sport is fueled by the time and effort these people give. The best way to change something you don't agree with is to get involved. If a marshal is really out of line, please feel free to talk with the stage captain (located at stage start for most situations) and we will do our best to diffuse any disagreements.

I do hope you make it out there and have a great time!

Some rules might be more silly than others but they are there for a reason....safety and the need to be able to come back next year and play in the forest.

For example, a few years back I was a marshall and before our stage opened we were visited by the local forest ranger. We had an exceptionally dry summer that year and he stressed that smoking presented a real hazard and forest fire danger. Enforcing that request became a challenge since some people took it personally and couldn't see it as anything but a power trip on my part.

Getting permission to use the forest roads is difficult (and there are forces out there that really want us out of there). If a marshall asks you to do something there's a reason for it. If you want to continue to have events like this so you can spectate, compete, or volunteer. If you spectate, be courteous and comply with any requests that might be made.

Here are a few things you can do to help this rally.
The organizers could use your help. What better way to see a rally up close and personal! Experience is not needed for most positions.

Road Marshal: Stationed along the stage, your job is to make sure non-rally folks do not enter the course and everything is ok at your station. You get to watch the race from a cool spot! This is an easy position for first-time volunteers, but a very important one.

HAM radio operators: used for stage communication

Time Controls: Learn how a rally works from the inside. Start and finish control to record stage times and start the cars. A great way to see the cars, drivers and codrivers up close or learn what you need to do as a future competitor.

Sucks I won't be able to see it this year. Last year was a lot of fun to spectate.

I spoke with the volunteer coordinator today. The email she sends out says, "a week or so before the event, you will get your worker assignment." (paraphrased). You guys should all be getting your assignments shortly.

I know she is working on it and we're excited to have so many people volunteering! Thanks again for volunteering guys!

Just signed up to volunteer! Going to be my first rally, but I'm looking to just help out in anyway that I can and have a good time. Now lets just hope the store manager is going to honor the time off request that I put in two months ago.
