Flatirons Tuning is proud to announce that we now have access to Modena Torque Biasing Differentials, and Gear-Sets for the Subaru 5-Speed Transmissions.

Modena is one of Australia's Premier Gear and Differential manufactures and they specialize in making motorsports grade parts. Modena specializes in producing Porsche gears and differentials for club racers, all the way up to endurance race-cars. They have also developed a proprietary sequential transmission for various motorsports applications including the Australian Touring Car Championship.

But quietly in the background, they have been producing Gears and differentials for Subaru's as well. Below is what we have available at present, but there will be more on the way soon. Including a gear-set or two for the STI 6-Speed Transmission.


New! - - - - Modena Torque Biased Front Differential for the WRX



Modena is one of Australia's premier manufacturers of Motorsport Gears and Differentials.

This is Modena's Torsen Style Torque Biasing Front Differential for the 2002 - 2007 WRX. This replaces the factory open differential, and will behave much like the factory LSD that is in the rear differential, or like the front LSD that comes in the STI from the factory.

Modena's Torque Biasing Differential will provide improved traction under acceleration, but will open, or "Unlock" under deceleration as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator. This is ideal for a car that is driven on the street, or at the track or Auto-X course because it will give you improved traction through the corner, and will help reduce understeer.

The reason that this differential is not called a "Limited Slip Differential" is because it doesn't "lock-up" when the wheels begin to slip, which means that both wheels are receiving the same amount of torque and turning at or near the same speed.

Instead, The Modena Torque Biasing Differential will transfer torque between the left and right wheel in order to make sure that 100% of the torque that is sent to the front axle is distributed between the two wheels. In other words, if one wheel is receiving 60% of the torque, this differential will make sure that the other 40% is sent to the other wheel.

This results in improved traction for a better exit from the corner, without inducing any understeer, which a "Locked" Limited Slip Differential has a tendency to do.

Professional installation is strongly recommended, and this diff. comes with stub-axles all ready installed, for ease of installation.

Modena Hybrid RA Ratio Dog-Box Gear Set for the Subaru 5MT Transmission



This is a Modena Hybrid Ratio Rally Dog Box for the Subaru 5MT transmission. This is a competition Spec. gear-set, and professional installation is very strongly recommended.

You could say that the ratios are a hybrid of v5/v6 STi street ratios and RA ratios. The 1,2 are RA and 3,4,&5 are STi. This makes for a tall first with a great tight stack that will get you to 100mph really quickly. But it will still cruise down the highway without revving too high.

The ratios are as follows:
1st gear 3.00
2nd gear 1.92
3rd gear 1.294
4th gear 1.000
5th gear 0.791

Modena Group-N Ratio Dog-Box Gear Set for the Subaru 5MT Transmission





This is a Modena Group-N Ratio Rally Dog Box for the Subaru 5MT transmission. This is a Competition Spec. gear-set, and professional installation is very strongly recommended.

The Modena Group-N ratios are as follows:

1st gear: 2.917
2nd gear: 2.091
3rd gear: 1.555
4th gear: 1.176
5th gear: 0.900

The Modena Group-N Gear Box is taller down low and shorter up top than the Modena Hybrid Gear Box. They are super tight and super aggressive with the bare minimum of rpm drops between gears to always be in the sweet spot of the engine. This is ideal for a Rally Car that is using a restrictor that dramatically narrows your torque curve.

This kit includes all parts necessary for installation including:

STI Group-N Engine & Transmission Mounts



These Engine and Transmission mounts are made by Subaru Technica International to replace the stock parts.They are made using stiffer rubber and plastic to reduce movement of the engine and transmission under hard acceleration and braking.These are strongly recommended for highly modified engines.

Each part is available separately, or you can save with our Group-N Engine Mount Kit which includes all three Engine Mounts, or our Complete Group-N Kit which includes the Transmission Mount as well.

2005 - 2008 OEM Legacy GT 5-Speed Gear Set



This is the OEM Main Shaft, and 1st through 4th gear that came in the 5-Speed manual transmission in the 2005 – 2008 Legacy GT.

The Gear ratio’s of this transmission are:

1st: 3.166

2nd: 1.882

3rd: 1.296

4th: 0.972

5th: 0.738


This set is available with either the Main Shaft and 1st and 2nd gear, or the Main Shaft and 1st through 4th gear. This gear set can be retrofitted into most Subaru 5-speed gear sets, but depending on the year of your transmission, you would need additional parts.

We now offer the 1-4 gear set with installation kits for the 2002 - 2007 WRX. Each kit is slightly different, but they all include all the parts that are required for installation. There may be other parts that need to be replaced due to wear, shuch as bearings and synchros. If you need any other parts, let us know.


All of the install kits to include a new speedo-gear, but WRX's with a 3.7 final drive will have a slight speedometer discrepency.

Professional installation is very strongly recommended, and if this gear set goes into any car other than it was designed for, there is no warranty expressed or implied.

Also, because of the number of issues that can arise due to improper installation, if we do not install this gear set for you, we do not offer any warranty on the parts.

This Just In!







Modena looked at the options for differentials available for the Subaru STI 6-Speed transmission, and saw that there was not much in the way of a true motorsports differential. For this reason, Modena has released a set of differentials for the Subaru 6-Speed STI Transmission for motorsport applications that are second to none in terms of performance and adjustability.

The exact same locking mechanism used in these Subaru differentials are being used all over the world in cars that compete in Rally Racing, as well as sprint racing and endurance racing.

All 3 of these Modena differentials use the same Modena Limited Slip assembly with Modena Clutch plates, making all 3 equally adjustable and rebuildable. The special Modena clutch plates provide so much lock-up that these differentials are only designed to work with R Compound Race tires, as street tires will most likely not provide enough traction to get the clutch plates to slip.

The front differential comes in what would be considered a 1.5 way configuration. The two options are 90% Lock under acceleration and 40% lock under deceleration, or 85% Lock under Acceleration, and 35% under deceleration. (90/40 or 85/35)

The Rear and Center differential are using the same 2 way configuration. The two options for the center and rear differentials are 80% lock under both acceleration and deceleration, or 90% lock under both acceleration and deceleration. (80/80 or 90/90)

Other locking profiles are available, so if you do not see what you are looking for, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

The other thing to note is that service for these differentials is now available here in the US with a quick turnaround. It will usually only take between 24 and 48 hours to rebuild, or reconfigure your differential.

Since these differentials are designed for motorsports application, it is recommend that you have them re-built every 80 – 100 hours of use.

The R180 Rear differential can be used by itself with the OEM Subaru center and front differential for some applications. The Front differential can also be used with the OEM Subaru DCCD, but it is not recommended. If you are going to use the Modena Center Differential, you would need to use the Modena front and Rear differentials as well.

We do encourage you to ask any questions before you order these differentials to make sure that you are getting the correct set-up for your driving application.

If you are doing a clutch and flywheel installation, we recommend re-sealing the back side of the motor while you have access. If you are a low mileage car this may not be necessary, but for most applications, it is good peace of mind.

These Exedy kits are essentially the exact same clutch that is in the stock WRX. The stock clutch is manufactured by Exedy, so cut out the middle man (Subaru) and get this for almost half the cost of the OEM one!

The price for the Front Diff is actually right in line with other comparable diff's out on the market.

As for the gear set, this is a top of the line motorsport gear set, that is actually a very good value compared to an equivalent PPG set for instance.
